The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Yapei-Kusawgu constituency and member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, John Abdulai Jinapor, has stated that the recent erratic power supply (known in local parlance as Dumsor) is due to the government’s inability to purchase enough gas to power the thermal plants.
The former deputy minister of energy, John Jinapor, said the current 'Dumsor' is purely a financial issue and not a maintenance issue, as purported by the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of God (ECG), Mr. Dubik Mahama.
He alleged that the government needs about US$50 million to defray old debts and to purchase more gas.
He said, “It is a financial problem; if they have the money today and they buy fuel, it will be over; the thermal plants are available; Hydro is performing at full capacity; all they need is to get fuel for the thermal plants."
“They’ve asked about 50 million dollars to buy fuel, but the Ministry of Finance hasn’t been able to get them the money,” he stated.
The ranking member also shared the views of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), indicating that the onus lies on GRIDCo to inform the distributor, ECG, about the quantum of power available for the bulk supply points.
“Yes, that is true. GRIDCo has to inform ECG that we don’t have enough power, so this evening we can’t give you enough power, then GRIDCo will tell ECG that this evening we are taking the Mallam bulk supply point off so that ECG informs its customers,” said Jinapor, adding, “I was surprised the MD [of ECG] tried to take the fall by saying that some [630] transformers are loaded.”
He added, “That is not the reason why we are facing power outages. The reason is that we don’t have enough generation. So if there is no generation, GRIDCo cannot supply and if GRIDCo cannot supply, it has to take a bulk supply point off.”
“That is the truth; this narrative and the fabricated stories of a so-called transformer overload are a huge lie,” he told Alfred Ocansey on 3FM’s news analysis programme, Hot Edition, on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, finds it difficult to come to terms with the possible cause of the power outages.
According to him, he does not understand why the electricity supply has been uninterrupted for seven years (7 years) until few months to end the eight-year tenure.

Recently VRA made Ghanaians know that they are selling power at 2.5 cents per Kw/h and you as a deputy minister of energy is selling to Ghanaians at 10 cents per Kw/h and you are not ashamed of yourself. Knowing your plans you signed a take or pay and on top of it you allow Ghanaians to buy fuel for your dubiooooos IPPs. After burdening Ghanaians with such debts you turn around for Ghanaians to vote for you because we have short memories. Let me ask you, if Ghana is your company would you have signed this contract. Dumsor under Mahama took almost five years to resolve, and it came with inflated cost of power plants, higher tariffs and Take or Pay PPAs foe which we pay USD500million a year for capacity not utilised. You gave the nerves to combine a.d play mischief with a few weeks of unstable power? God will, of course punish you and your Mahama who stole USDbillions out of our calamity which you created.
What did you and your ndc government do to solve the problems for those non stop 5 years of dumsor but complaining bitterly for these few weeks of power outages?
The current so-called Dumsor is very much exaggerated. I was worried when I was in London and listening to the news from home. I have been in Ghana for almost two weeks and haven't experienced not even 5 minutes of so-called Dumdor. NDC should give us a break and stop the lies. If this time it is a financial problem, what about your time? For seven years we have had uninterrupted power. Stop scaring people because it is not all that bad.
And so what? This boy is talking too much. We were not in heaven when you corrupt NDC guys were in power. Sh..ut upp.
