Atik Mohammed says the Assin North by-election should teach the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) a big lesson as they head for the 2024 general elections.
To him, the Assin North by-election is a precursor to the main national elections, thus the outcome of the election proves how unhappy Ghanaians are with the government.
He noted that the New Patriotic Party has a lot of work to do if they want to clinch victory in the 2024 elections.
"The NPP has a lot to do going forward. If the 2024 election is indeed their heart desire and they really want to win, there is a lot of work to do. First, there is internal party disappointment or disillusionment . . .and again there are all kinds of perceptions about what is happening within the NPP and so on . . . the other issue is that Ghanaians generally are unhappy at this point and let nobody kid himself into saying this is not true," he said on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' show.
Atik Mohammed slammed President Nana Akufo-Addo for making Ghana's economy "hard" for Ghanaians and cautioned the ruling party stressing "when the economy is tight, nobody is excited. Nobody is happy. So, I'm happy Ghanaians showed their unhappiness on the ballot".
He also lambasted the NPP over claims of vote buying during the by-election.
"I am disgusted at this practice of buying votes and politicians are hypocritical. When they buy and lose, they blame others but when they buy and win the elections, they attribute it to hard work."

No Nana can not destroy NPP , Ken will reset the party . Current gov . is using Hetler method ,where they make people hungry and when they give food you don't think but go for it .They manage to win Kumawu but Assin apply wisdom .Now they want to apply PDS style to TOR , few people in his gov with Gabby to take the lease . Instead the gov to go into production is now increasing taxes .With this they are employing more on servicing sector .Sometimes we need a businessman to Lead Ghana .KEN AGYAPONG is the best , he cares for humans and always want the right to be done . Yes everyone has some BUT.
Wao look
Well said. Atik is speaking like he read my earlier comments on same platform when the president said NPP members should have their heads up after the Assin North fiasco. The president should know that NPP supporters like him and wish that he succeeds. I am a true blood NPP person and can tell you that when the ban on political parties was lifted in 1991/92 , the NPP after it's formation was not that popular in certain parts of the country. Rawlings and his PNDC members knew of their intentions for Ghana to go democratic again so the took the lead in getting some influential people in all the regions. Except a few die hards UP/PFP supporters who stood their grounds, some were convinced to join the NDC out of fear. I can tell you ordinary NPP supporters had to contribute monies for the party executives to attend meetings in Accra because some of the regional chairmen were poor. Infact the NPP from 1992 to 1996 and even 2000 had difficulties getting people to contest as parliamentary candidates in some constituencies. Through perseverance, by 2000 the party had gained popularity thanks to party stalwarts like Prof Adu Boahen, Safo Adu, Dzane Selby, Agyenim Boateng, Alhaji Abdulai Issahaku from upper west, Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Salifu aka COP, John Agyekum Kufuor, Christine churcher, Gladys Asmah, Jake Obtsebi Lamptey, Hawa Yakubu among several others. Most of these small boys and girls ministers and MMDCEs currently showing off were in school by then. I dare say some current ministers in the Akuffo Addo government today were not NPP , if they were what prevented them from contesting for MP in their constituencies then because they were qualified at the time. Today these are the very people who have hijacked the party. I remember a former NPP regional chairman( now deceased) once said at a meeting somewhere in 2000 before the elections, that this party (NPP) we are struggling with will one day win power and people hitherto unknown in the party will pour backets of water on themselves pretending they are soaked with sweat after the party have won looking for positions in the NPP government. Indeed his words have come to pass. When J.A. Kufuor became president he could visit a region/ district and asked for a very poor/ ordinary party supporter he knows and order the regional minister or MMDCE to call him or her to come . The regional ministers and MMDCEs had no alternative than to respect and recognize all party supporters irrespective of their economic or social standing in society. Kufour gave a lot of power to the party executives and listened to them a lot because they were on the ground and knows all that is happening. Today it's the direct opposite and someone thinks party supporters should be happy, they can't. Today almost all those who worked very hard to to place NPP firmly on the ground have been relegated to the background. Those of us who know some of them pity them when we see them. Others also see them. Now if you have a party behaving like this how do make it attractive for others to come in . I head NDC's Sammy Gyamfi say the defeated NPP candidate in just ended Assin north by election contacted the NDC for them to drop Gyakye Quayson for him to stand on the NDC ticket, Gyamfi told him they don't do such things in the NDC, bet me if it were the NPP they would have readily agreed. Why am i saying this. In some constituencies we saw men and women contesting parliamentary elections and losing when the NPP was in opposition. Immediately the party won power, someone will appear all of a sudden because he or she has money to contest the party's primaries and end up defeating this candidate who was contesting and losing when the party was in opposition . This was one of the ressons why the NPP lost some parliamentary seats . If you use your power to force parliamentary candidates on others, you can't use same power to force the people to vote for your choice of MP, that one your powers haven't reach there. When kufour was in opposition/ power he had a close aid called Alhaji Inusah from the Walewale area who wanted to contest the Ayawaso west wuagon constituency in 2004 but kufour refused because one Isaac Amoo who contested in 2000 won the seat but was robbed of victory with the case pending in court, out of anger Alhaji Inusah left the NPP to join the NDC. Finally the courts vindicated kufour by declaring Isaac Amoo as the Winner of that parliamentary elections even though the NDC candidate had almost completed his term in parliament. This can only be a mark of a good leader. Bet me if it were these current NPP leadership they won't see things that way. Indeed the NPP has a Herculean task going into 2024. The party will have to go for overhauling after 2024. People who have been with the NPP from 1992, 1996 - current i know will sometimes sit back and ask themselves, is this the same NPP we were struggling with?
Greedy and wicked Akyem mafias have succeeded in destroying NPP forevermore. Prez and the Finance minister are to be questioned
