The Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has said some minority members in Parliament are bent to tagging the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), Madam Jean Mensa as “arrogant”.
This he said was due to Jean Mensa’s inability to appear before the House last week Thursday for a discussion on the new Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) for the 2024 elections.
But the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs said the perception is far from true – explaining that the EC boss has anytime she is absent from the House given a tangible reason for her non-appearance.
“The only time she did not appear in Parliament, we called her and she told me she was not in the country due to health-related issues. Can you hold that against somebody?” he questioned in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show, 'Ghana Montie'.
"Sometimes you don’t understand how people [referring to fellow MPs] react to issues. Some people are bent on creating distrust about the Electoral Commissioner. That is unfortunate,” he added.

The attitude of the NDC against the use of technology to improve our electoral process gives me the impression that the NDC has hitherto corrupted the system. That is why the NDC feels uncomfortable and apprehensive about the EC's effort to block the loopholes that are bleeding malpractices into our electoral processes. Today, technology gives us more room to progress by being innovative in solving our problems. It offers the opportunity to use it to leapfrog our huge infrastructure deficit. And I think only a diabolical mind will be desperate to resist its application. The NDC should be mindful that excessive baseless opposition leads to loss of credibility and accountability.
The minority find Jean Mensah too tough to handle. She doesn't pander to their bullying tactics. Kudos to her.
Minority tactics is "give a dog a bad name and hang her". Moreover, our culture put women down but we live in the era of equality and there are no moral reasons to tag professional and successful women "arrogant". They wouldn't do that Dr Afari Gyan. Well meaning Ghanaians know this and Jean Mensah will prevail. For me, Jean Mensah is the best.
