Former Chief Justice of Ghana, Sophia Akuffo says NPP’s Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko is not relevant in his party – hence, must shun his bossy attitude.
She said Gabby was not a member of the government and therefore cannot be speaking for the government.
She was responding to criticism from Gabby over her participation in the pensioner bondholders’ picket at the Ministry of Finance on Friday, February 10, 2023.
To Gabby, the former Chief Justice erred in her move to join pensioner bondholders in their resolve to get the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to exempt them from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
But Madame Sophia Akuffo, in her response, tagged Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko as a less important being.
“He [Gabby] cannot tell me what I need to do and what I do not need to do and it's as simple as that . . . you know I don’t have time for things like that because people like Gabby are not important to me or to my life, he is a disturbance and that’s all I can say about it,” she told Journalists when she joined pensioner bondholders to picket again at the Ministry of Finance on February 14, 2023.
“With the way things are going and from what I sense, there will be a creation of two categories of bondholders. Those who refused not to participate but still want to stand by the existing bonds that they have with the government."
"My problem with the whole Debt Exchange Programme is the destruction that will come upon this nation which is being done and can last through many generations. It took a long time for Ghanaians to buy into any government securities because there was always the suspicion of the unknown and now that is being introduced in the form of the DDEP,” Sophia Akuffo lamented.
“I’m seeing it purely from a legal point of view, their contractual rights being threatened. Then I have to say something. I have to join them in solidarity. Their pain is my pain because I have retired sisters, I have retired friends, and so on and so forth,” she said on Friday.
She hoisted a placard with the inscription ‘We depend on our bond yields to pay our rent, medical bills, electricity bills and water bills.’

This is acidic. I now understand why certain people are lonely
With his childish, biased demeanor in the face of avoidable, counterproductive ulterrances, I believe Otcherte Darko is causing unnecessary problems for the NPP and the president. You see, as per normal mature etiquette and even beyond it, "if somebody is telling you a ridiculous story or all that may have the earmarks of being a big lie, do not, for your best interest, give him or her a suspicious look as much as to say, "I know you are lying to me"." The former CJ's decision to picket is based solely on her democratic right, especially coming from a former CJ. She must have had her absolute reasons, and I find it disrespectful that Gabby sought to criticize her in the way he did it.
By their deeds, we shall know them all. You see, once upon a time a president appointed a Chief Justice who, by coincidence or whatever, shared the same surname as the president, and the president was furiously condemned for forming a family government by the opposition. Today the former CJ is picketing against the government for a policy she is totally against, beyond any relationship, if any at all, with the president. People fail to recognize how devious politicians can be in slandering the reputations of innocent people. Once again, be mindful that if you eat all your eggs, you kill your chickens too.
Madam, God richly bless you.
Auntie Sophia does not have the patience to stomach divergent view. Why is she disrespecting Gabby? Gabby was not disrespectful to her with his comment. So where from this attitude of someone being important and all that ***barred word***.
The Nana Addo is a disgrace for the future. He is setting a bad precedence and Ghanaians should be careful. A time will come when no one will even buy treasure bills anymore. What is the loan used for?
Sophia, you have a mission which died at birth. Sorry for toying with your dignified position..
Hahahaaaa, this is a woman of substance. Even though an appointee of the current president ( remember Akuffo Addo elevated her to the position of Chief Justice) she is not ready to be a boot licker like others. Truth is one and it is . We need more of such people in this country. People who are ready to tell power their peace of mind. When other countries are doing all they can to make life comfortable for their senior citizens, here we are giving our elderly states men sleepless nights. The amazing thing is that they are not picketing to demand any goodies from government. These monies are their own monies made out of years of hardwork so for anybody to want to rob them of their own can only be termed as wicked. If at your age ( Ken Ofori atta) you are still relying on these old people to survive then you have failed big time. If you don't have anything to give them for their meritorious service to mother Ghana at least don't rob them. If your father bequeathed to you a house, if you can't add more rooms to it, you don't demolish it knowing you can't build one. This is exactly what you are doing. Very soon the children and grandchildren of these elderly people may join them in solidarity. This could be dangerous because you don't know the positions their children and great occupy. Am NPP but you are making communication very difficult for the party's communicators. How can one defend this move.
