PPP National Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu, has charged the Government of Ghana to immediately and completely ban the import of some food items into the country.
According to him, it is about time the Ghanaian businesses were given full ownership of the trade of certain commodities to boost the local sector and the country at large.
Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme while looking at the fast depreciation of the cedi against foreign currencies, particularly the US Dollar, Nana Ofori Owusu asked the government to take stringent measures against foreign imports to salvage the local economy.
The US Dollar has currently jumped from over 9 dollars to a cedi to 10 dollars.
The PPP National Chairman proposed what he believes is a lasting solution to the economic challenges, stating categorically that "we must ban completely the importation of cocoa, soft drink, fruit juice, fruits, poultry, meat".
"We have to ban it completely! . . . "We must ban it and put the pressure on the local economy and the local Ghanaians to fill this vacuum and let the agric sector to focus on these areas so that Ghanaians can be the ones producing. We must completely ban the importation of rice and sugar."
He stressed that transforming the economy will not come easy but it behoves the government to be firm in her decisions.
"We must take difficult decisions. That's why we have leaders," he exclaimed.

Maybe John Mahama has been vindicated. Listen to him " You have never held any responsibility anywhere near the presidency before. You don't know what it is like to be president. You know what it is to be a president? Then you stand and say incompetent Mahama administration, incompetent........." As Ghanaians will say ' Mahama, come for your stone. Truth be told, the only successful policy of akuffo Addo so far is that he has come to make John Mahama a saint. And like he rightly said, his incompetence is not for them to judge, it is left to the people of Ghana to judge. Today Ghanaians are the best judges. Am for NPP but i can bet with my last pesewa that if there were to be any election between John Mahama and Akuffo Addo any day anywhere John Mahama will win hands down. It's too obvious. NPP paaaa nie, with all our communicators on TV and radio stations becoming stamerers all of a sudden. 2024 will be interesting. TV and radio stations will play your own voices for you to hear what you said THEN and NOW. Then the people will judge through the ballot box. So how will Ghanaians term the cocoa, timber, gold, bauxite, manganese, crude oil, a blessing or a curse?
Are we prepared for that ? The president made fine initiatives but he does walk the talk .His people are importing more .They thought they are getting money for themselves .Only in Africa when people place in positions think of themselves first .They use their positions to make money and other thing. Our leaders allow foreigners to gain and we destroy our own business . It seems we do not learn from the past and from others .Wars in Africa most generated from all these behaviors .Government continues to burden the people while they do not check on their expenses .The leaders behavior as Gods they take everything free ,the laws favor them .Nationalism is thrown away and we pursue partisan and tribalism these are dangerous sign for the future. With covid I hope we can learn something .
His suggestion may seem good on the surface but it is the worse thing you would want to do. It is going to cause inflation. Dealing with these challenges cannot be knee jerk, it requires comprehensive and well thought policies. There should be a deliberate strategy to establish import substitution industries which will reduce our reliance on imported goods.
You are absolutely right. We need to ban tooth pick, toilet paper and old newspapers.
The most sensible contributions so far from an opposition member. Well done Nana Ofori. Akufo Addo has really disappointed Ghanaians.
