Former General Secretary of the People's National Convention (PNC), Atik Mohammed has expressed worry over the state of Ghana's economy under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
According to him, "we are living in dire times".
He noted that Ghanaians' "living conditions have changed for the worse" and this, he explained, is mainly because the country's inflation rate has increased to about 27.3 percent which is "the highest in over 10 or 15 years".
"That is a gargantuan increase...The last time we had inflation figure close to this was in 2004. This proves that indeed one of the pointers about our economy show that things are not going well", he stressed while speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show Friday morning.
He stated that, due to the high inflation, the cost of food and energy has become exceedingly expensive, thus badly affecting the livelihood of many Ghanaians.
He added that the exchange rate in terms of the US Dollar to Ghana Cedi is also affected by inflation and with the cedi experiencing a huge depreciation against the dollar and other foreign currencies, the cost of living has risen high.
Atik Mohammed called on government to put measures in place to salvage the economy and make life better for the citizenry.

@Mike. The current speaker of parliament, Alban Bagbin once said he made several efforts to get in touch with then president John Mahama to advice him because some of his actions would affect the NDC, he was prevented from meeting the president because the powers that be said he was too critical of the government of which he was a key member. Today where is John Mahama and his appointees. Can John Mahama appoint a minister, MMDCE, CEO today. Today John Mahama easily welcomes anybody who wants to see him. Today he will be the first to admit that if he had his ears on the ground maybe he could have won election 2020. Today i can tell John Mahama in his face that i don't need anything from him but he needs me if he will contest election 2024 because i have a vote that counts and will determine his fate in the elections. It's politicians who need the people, we don't need them. Did Ghana stop working when we lost president Atta mills? Does Ghana standstill when parliament goes on recess? Does a constituency stop working when an MP dies? Any leader who is averse to criticism is bound to fail. Don't drink the soup too much so that we can all eat the fufu till is finished, you say no. okay go ahead and drink the soup as much as you want, when it's finished we will see what you will do to the fufu since fufu cannot be eaten without soup.
@ Mike. Then Kwabena Duncan, a former central regional minister and NPP MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong are equally not true NPP persons. Kwamina Duncan openly said this is not the NPP he knows. Kennedy Agyapong when asked if protecting the public purse was the measuring rod for the 2024 elections, will NPP do well? His answer was ' we will lose'. If a true party person is the one who see every black thing in his party as white, then it's most unfortunate. If shcool feeding caterers are on strike causing poor kids in rural areas to stop schooling because of GHC 3.00 , if common fund, Getfund, road fund, health insurance fund all all in arrears and yet GHC 25,000,000.00 of tax payers money can go into building a cathedral and true NPP supporters are supposed to keep quiet, then it's unfortunate. Also write to the leadership of the NPP in parliament to sack the independent member for Fomena from sitting with the majority because he's not a true NPP person for going independent, Akuffo Addo said any NPP member who decides to contest as an independent parliamentary candidate is not NPP paapa ie not a true NPP person and that no independent MP can assist ' independent biaa ontimi boa me'. Today if the fomena MP were to go by the words of the president........... . If there is no food in the house, electricity and water bills are in arrears, school fees have not be paid and your father organizes money to go and donate to a church, a son tells the father that if he were to do that they will go hungry, that says ' you are not a true son '. If you realize your father is sleeping while driving, you tell your father, please don't drive carelessly, we can lose our lives, your looks at you and say, you are not a true son. Hmmmmm.
@kunchan THANK YOU IF WE HAVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU CRITICIZE THIS ***barred word*** AND INCOMPETENT GOVERNMENT GHANA WILL MOVE FORWARD, BUT WHEN WE HAVE ***barred word*** SINGING PRAISES WHEN THIS ***barred word*** GOVERNMENT LEADS MOTHER GHANA INTO A DITCH WE ARE DOOMED...GOD SAVE GHANA
@Kunchan. I don’t think you’re a true Npp person. People benefit from a system in their country in different form. We all can’t be government appointees. Get life work hard and criticise with humour. If you like NDC you can vote for them in Dec 2024.
I love the NPP and have been voting for the party since 1996. If there is any leader Ghanaians have so much hope in to change the fortunes of this country for the better it's Akuffo Addo. Unfortunately has squandered a golden opportunity to have made history. If you have a leader whose appointees cannot tell him the truth in the face, then the people are in for trouble. Currently nothing seems to be working. Under kufour we saw a vibrant NPP for 8 years to the extent that it's presidential candidate in 2008, Akuffo Addo led with 49% meani the NPP was still the popular choice of Ghanaians. If Kufuor and his appointees were misbehaving like we are seeing, Akuffo Addo would not have come to meet a formidable NPP to ride on to power. Akuffo Addo is making Mahama look like a better option despite his flaws. 5 years on akuffo Addo can't do a simple reshuffle, this one doesn't need any parliamentary approval to do. Roads, finance, defence, interior, transport, foreign affairs, agriculture, trade, national security same ministers for 5 years running. What kind of leadership style is this? If Akuffo Addo were to hand over to John Mahama in 2025, he will enter the recods as the worse president in Ghana's history, if people see the man you claim to be incompetent far better than you, how will they describe you too. Currently if you are not a minister, deputy minister, MP, CEO, MMDCE, forget about a decent life. How come the negative effects of corona and Russia/Ukraine war is not affecting this group. Is Ghana now George Owell's ***barred word*** farm? No wonder some NPP bigwigs are coming out openly to say this is not the NPP they know. This one is a direct opposite of the kufour one. NDC supporters are not laughing, NPP supporters are sweating. Nobody is laughing. Infact NDC is better, at least their mother is not in the kitchen , now the one who's mother is in the kitchen can't prepare any food. Unfortunate.
