Paramount Chief and the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, Togbe Afede XIV has clarified why he rejected GH¢365,392.67 ex-gratia paid to him for serving on the Council of State between 2017 and 2020.
According to him, it is not appropriate to receive the said amount when he already took monthly salaries for serving on the Council.
"I did not think the payment was made to trap me, as is being speculated. I believe it was paid to everybody who served on the Council of State. However, I thought that extra payment was inappropriate for a short, effectively part-time work, for which I received a monthly salary and was entitled to other privileges. So, I was very uncomfortable with it," he stated in a release.
He provided these clarifications after members of the public reacted to news of whether or not he indeed followed through with his supposed refund and the rationale behind it.
“After weeks of trying, I obtained advice on how to refund inappropriate payments to the State, and on March 4, 2022, I made the refund into the Controller & Accountant General’s Department Suspense Account at the Bank of Ghana,” he said in the statement.
The move, per Togbui Afede, is in line with his long-standing principle against dishing out huge funds for to public officials at the expense of the citizenry.
“I want to add that my rejection of the payment was consistent with my general abhorrence of the payment of huge Ex Gratia and other outrageous benefits to people who have by their own volition offered to serve our poor country,” the statement concluded.

If it's because of the poor that you rejected this money, then you should have picked it end ensure that it gets to the poor and Ghanaians will still applaud you , having returned the money, can you guarantee that the money will get to the poor , the people are using touch lights to search for money in the consolidated fund at night and you are returning it in broad day light. I doubt whether this gesture will lead to the cancellation of exgratia, it won't. Remember 90% of political appointees are always timing the exgratia before a decision is taken on how much should be paid .
Who cares about your refund of ex-gratia. He needs attention for popularity. A star can never be bigger than the moon. A kingdom is bigger than paramountcy. A wolf in a sheep cloth is always a wolf. He has no comfort because of his hatred against a certain tribe; he will continue to have a nightmare.
Some leaders in Ghana appears shallow in thinking . Same chief during prof .Mills Government said that voltarians now have their Government .Togbe Afede took car during his term as Council of State member so if that chief has conscience then he must as well return the car . This is the most cheapest chief in Ghana .Is the ex-gratia not in the constitution of Republic of Ghana? He must visit the nearest psychiatric hospital for evaluation. Almost everybody in the country knows you belong to NDC and must put it to you that you are a disgrace chief and your mindset is infantile for taking such a ***barred word*** decision .
This is populist move and pregnant with politics. Nana, please call for constitutional review ASAP and cancelation of emolument for Article 71 holders. The 1992 Constitution was primarily grafted to suit the PNDC.
This chief is only playing politics. He is an NDC chief. He must return all the Ex-gratia paid him during NDC time and we will take him serious. I don't know how he ended up on the Council of State under Akuffo Addo government. NPP must be careful of these kind of characters. There are many more credible chiefs to appoint to the council.
The Chief is only doing the usual Ghanaian politics. Is this the first Ex-Gratia he has received from the State? He should go through his records and return funds paid to him as Board Member of BOG, NIB and others by the State before we would take him as being genuine.
Teeth Okujeto Abrokwa must read and listen to the sensible Chief Afede so he can also return his stolen Ghana monies. How can you take two Ghana Airforce planes ✈️ ✈️ to the North just to marry your wife. Hypocrite Samuel Okujeto Abrokwa! NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU
