The Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament Hon. Hawa Koomson firing gunshots at a registration centre on Monday, July 20, 2020 has received total condemnation her colleagues on both sides.
Both Majority and Minority in a disagreement with the warning shots given by the Special Development Initiatives Minister at the voters’ registration centre at Kasoa described the act as unacceptable and an embarrassment to the House.
“When I heard her herself, I was shocked. My worry is that what level of provocation will get a Member of Parliament to fire a warning shot at a registration centre where there are police officers which I believe are there to ensure law and order and when it becomes necessary they may even call for reinforcement.
“So what really happened that really called for that,” NDC MP for Asawase Muntaka Mubarak wondered in an interview with JoyNews.
Mavis Hawa Koomson on Monday admitted to firing gunshots at a voter’s registration center, an act that has received massive condemnation from the public domain.
Although the Special Development Initiatives Minister says she fired the shots because she felt her safety was threatened, there have been many calls for her to be prosecuted.
Notwithstanding the explanation given, NDC Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Hon. Ras Mubarak has called on the Privileges Committee of Parliament to summon and investigate her on the matter, but Member of Parliament for Kpandai Constituency, Matthew Nyindam believes that should not be so.
Mr. Nyindam condemns the act and agrees that she needs to be sanctioned, he believes calling her before the house is unnecessary.
“I think I disagree with Ras Mubarak because the fact that she’s a member of parliament’s doesn’t mean that any action that one takes must necessarily be called to the privileges committee.
“Yes it has to do with her, and she has admitted to that but I think it also has to deal with the police and the police must do their own investigation and get the button of this.
“But for somebody to say she should be called to the privileges committee, I think I disagree with the person,” he added.

Are we surprised? Nana himself is a violent person and who can forget his "all-die-be-die" mantra? This is just that mantra putting on working-gear! They think they can muzzle the voters' register so that only people sympathetic to NPP can get on that register. But no matter what they will loose this election hands down. Even some of the NPP members who are witnessing the impunity and highhandedness of this Nana-led government are appalled at the impunity and lawlessness. To those senselessly defending this ediot of a minister I hope a relative of theirs is caught by a stray bullet and they can understand!
hon Muntaka...what didnt you do and say to all of us in Ghana when u suspected that people were busing others to come and register in your constituency..pls give us a break. why is everybody talking about the the gun shot...why is nobody talking about what triggered the shot..pls stop the hypocrisy....Maxwell Mahama lost guard and now where is he? Hon Hawa could have been killed
Npp has had violent Hawas before. In her haydays, Hawa Yakubu had Bawku in her hands. Guns be what, motor-mounted thugs etc. Where is all that ?? But really,, is her conduct surprising ? For the sheer purpose of disenfranchising people, a who war has been declared on the volta region. Military personnel and artillery are the daily things voltarians must struggle with. Is it therefore surprising that an MP will load a gun, take it into a crowd and start firing. She knows the president is doing worse and he will clear her soon. It's a blessed assurance. This is the bloody widow cenario all over again. Feminists make the constant claim that women in politics are not violent, less corrupt and generally Caring. They should look at the likes of the bloody widow, Hawa Koomson, Ursula Owusu and reassess those claims.
IT IS DISHEARTENED FOR GHANA PARLIAMENT AND OTHERS TO ATTACK HON, HAWA YAKUBO. HER ATTACKER HAVE NOT TAKEN THE TROUBLE TO KNOW OF WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED AT THE GROUND. IT IS EASY FOR ANY LAZY ARMED CHAIR COMMENTATOR TO CRITICIZE WITHOUT ASSESSING THE ISSUE IN DETAILS. WE MUST ASK QUESTIONS SUCH AS WHAT WAS THE FACE MASK MOTORBIKE RIDERS DOING AT THE POLLING STATION. WHAT WAS THEIR PURPOSE AND INTENTION. WE ALL KNOW IN THE PAST THAT SOME GHANAIANS WERE BEATEN AT ATIWA, CHIRIPONI AND OTHER PLACE IN POLITICAL ACTIVITIES. THE GANGSTERS ARE ALWAYS SENT BY SOME EVIL POLITICIANS TO CAUSE THE MAYHEM FOR THEM. HON, HAWA PREVENTED A REPETITION OF SUCH INCIDENTS. DO YOU THINK THAT THE MP HAWA WAS SO RECKLESS TO FIRE A WARNING SHOT WITHOUT BEING THREATENED. HAS SHE BEEN EVER ASSOCIATED WITH VIOLENCE. SHE IS NEVER KNOWN TO BE PROVOCATIVE NOR A THREAT TO PEACE IN SPEECH AND IN ACTION. I AM SERIOUSLY VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THOSE WHO HAVE CRITICIZED HER. DO THEY WANT HER TO BE ATTACKED AND HURT SO THAT THEY CAN BLAME EC FOR THE REGISTRATION WHEN WE ALL KNOW THAT WE CANNOT DO AWAY WITH THE REGISTRATION AND THE ELECTIONS. FOR HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE NOT HEARD FROM MAHAMA AND MANY TOP NDC OFFICIALS AND OTHERS LIKE BERNARD MONA THAT THERE COULD BE NO REGISTRATION EVEN TO THE POINT OF SHEDDING BLOOD. UNFORTUNATELY THOSE TALKING TODAY NEVER SAW THE WISDOM TO CONDEMN SUCH VIOLENT UTTERANCES. NOW THE NDC FOOT SOLDIERS ARE EMBOLDENED TO EXECUTE WHAT THEIR MASTER'S KEEP TRUMPETING. IT IS SAD THAT WE DONT CRITICIZE THE BEATING OF WAR DRUMS BUT WE DO IT TO THOSE WHO PREVENT THEMSELVES FROM THEIR ATTACKS. IT IS DISAPPOINTING TO HEAR SUCH CRITICISM NOW FROM HIGH PERSONALITIES AND GROUPS LIKE KWESI ANING, CODEO, REV. EMMANUEL ASANTE, MPS AND OTHERS, WHEN WE HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THEM ANY STRONG CONDEMNATION AGAINST THE REPEATED CALL OF VIOLENCE TO MEET THE REGISTRATION. IF FOR ANYTHING HAWA MUST BE PRAISED FOR ACTING TO PREVENT GHANA TO BE IN THE FOREIGN MEDIA FOR A BAD NEWS. AFTER ALL SHE DID NOT AIM THE GUN AT ANYBODY TO INJURE ANY PERSON? SHE ONLY PROTECTED HERSELF AND OTHERS TO SPARE EC, THE GOVERNMENT AND THE NATION FROM THE LITANY OF NDC BLAME FOR WHAT THEY HAVE WISHED. IT IS SAD THAT PEOPLE SIT IN THE COMFORT OF THEIR HOMES AND CRITICIZE THE HARD WORKING WOMAN IN THE FIELD TO MONITOR THE REGISTRATION. NONE OF SUCH PEOPLE HAVE GONE OUT TO ANY OF THE HOT SPOTS LIKE KASOA TO SEE FOR THEMSELVES ABOUT WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING ON THE GROUND. EVEN A SIMPLE KEEN MONITORING FROM THE MEDIA CAN TELL ANYONE THAT KASOA SINCE DAY ONE OF THE REGISTRATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN THE NEWS FOR VIOLENCE AND MISUNDERSTANDING. I WILL PLEAD WITH HAWA TO BEEF UP HER PERSONAL SECURITY THE NEXT TIME SHE IS OUT. THE POLICE MUST ALSO INTENSIFY THEIR SURVEILLANCE AT KASOA AND ANY OTHER HOT SPOTS TO PREVENT THE BLOOD SHED TRUMPETED BY THE ENEMIES OD DEMOCRACY.
