The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that the return of final year Senior High School students to school was part of an "illegal" scheme to assemble the students for voter registration.
The NDC's Director of Elections, Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah at a press briefing today in Accra contended that the decision also contravenes the law which mandates the Electoral Commission to gazette a designated polling centre for 21 days.
"We (the NDC) remind the EC that according to C.I. 91 they are required to gazette a designated polling centre for 21 days. In the absence of that, any so-called registration centre, be it in a school or elsewhere is illegal," Mr Afriyie Ankrah said.
"It is true that the EC was quick to refer to their mandate as prescribed by CI 91 but they conveniently left out portions of the same CI that compels them to gazette for a defined number of days.
"We refer you, ladies and gentlemen to Regulation 2, Paragraph 3 of the CI 91: "The Commission shall at least twenty-one days before the first day of the national registration of voters, inform political parties and the general public by publication in the Gazette of a place it designates as a registration centre".
EC deploy officials to SHS
The Electoral Commission (EC) has deployed registration officials to Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country.
The officials will today,Friday and Saturday go to register final year students as part of the ongoing voters’ ID registration exercise.
The EC’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, Sylvia Annoh said the two-day exercise will be held in all SHSs that do not have polling stations within their schools.
“All qualified Senior High School students who are 18 and above are therefore encouraged to present themselves at these registration centres within their schools with either a passport or Ghana Identification Card.
“However, additional days will be announced when it becomes necessary to ensure that all eligible voters are registered,” she said.

NDC is in serious leadership crisis.... They complain about everything without giving any alternative suggestion. This party will remain in opposition for a very very very long time and may never get back to power again. Look at this Brazil 2014 chop chop Elvis talking... What happened to the Dzamefe Commission report?
Ahhhhhh.... this NDC, haaaaaaba! Listen to their argument? Haaaa. Where would the registration have been easier to EC? If the SHS students were home or in school? NDC and warp arguments, tewaaaaaa......
This is how far we have come. In deed the alternative is negative because NO thinking is made before talking
If the students were not in school will they still not be registering? NDC complains about anything and everything without thinking. The students do not need to be in school before voting so how can any human being with brains even as little as that of an ant's make such f000lish argument. And sometime I wonder what kind of journalist go and listen to these NDC thrash without asking any questions to point out their stuuupidity to them. Look at how a former minster of state thinks oooo. And they want us to give this country back to them to run with such level of IQ.
AKANDO HAS NO SENSEEE. I DONT KNOW WHERE HE WENT TO SCHOOL TO GET KNOWLEDGE. HE IS DISGRACE TO HIS SCHOOL. THE STUDENT WOULD HAVE ALL THE SAME REGISTERED WHEREVER THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN. AKANDO SHOULD STOP BROADCASTING HIS EMPTY MIND IN THE PUBLIC. IT TARNISHES THE IMAGE OF PARLIAMENT IF WE HAVE SUCH PEOPLE LIKE HIM AS OUR LEGISLATURES.
"Kidish" talk. Wouldn't they have registered all the same if they were still at home? Tell us something better to make informed decision to vote for you.
Such an infantal argument. What makes you think all the students that get to register will be voting only our opponents NPP. I feel so sorry for our party all because of the current crop of people leading the party. Instead of also going to the said schools to get them register and take our share of the voters, you are there throwing jabs. Will the schools in the voltage and oti regions not be registered? At least we should be happy getting them on the roll. Aaba why are these people making it difficult to defend the party.
THIS MAN IS BUSY THROWING OUT UNNECESSARY ARGUMENTS THINKING THAT GHANAIANS WILL VOTE FOR JM AGAIN ; SO THAT HE WILL GET OPPORTUNITY TO COME AND CHOP OUR MONEY AGAIN LIKE WHAT HE DID IN BRAZIL 2014. YOU LIE BAD MR AFRIYIE ANKRAH. OUR EYES ARE OPENED NOW, WE DON'T HAVE SHORT MEMORY AGAIN.
