The Member of Parliament for North Dayi constituency, Hon Joycelyn Tetteh has advocated the stepping up of public education on proper wearing of nose/face masks, by government agencies such as the Ministries of Health, Information, Local Government and Rural Development as well as the National Commission on Civic Education ( NCCE ) and the Media in order to help reduce the spread of Covid-19.
Joycelyn Tetteh raised the issue in Parliament in a statement on the need for proper wearing of nose/face masks.
"It has become the norm the world over as more than 50 countries now require people to cover their faces when they leave their homes," the North Dayi MP noted.
She lauded public compliance with the directive on the compulsory wearing of face masks but said some concerns ought to be addressed to make it useful.
"In our markets, on commercial vehicles and even at work places, you will find people who wear the mask below their chin, on their forehead, simply hang it around their neck or carry it in their hand and the impression is created that it is sufficient to own a mask and carry it around," Joycelyn Tetteh stated.
According to the North Dayi legislator the way some handle the masks especially the home-made fabric types is very worrying.
"Proper handling of the home-made ones requires that the masks are washed with warm soapy water , dried and ironed at least once a day if possible but sadly I have seen people wearing masks which appear rather soiled and unkempt," Joycelyn Tetteh noted.
She said MPs as representatives of the people must support efforts to educate the public on the wearing of face masks.
