Member of Parliament for Yapei/Kasawgu constituency, John Jinapor says Ghanaians should be worried over government's subsidization of electricity bills because there will be serious implications in the offing.
The Government of Ghana told the citizenry that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) financial aid of 1 billion dollars to the country is interest-free and will not accrue a long term effect.
According to Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, the loan was transferred into Ghana’s account to be used to mitigate the impact of the raging coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affecting the lives of the people and the economy at large.
The money is reportedly the biggest loan facility received from the IMF in Ghana’s 63-year old history with the Bretton Woods institution.
Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM's programme 'Kokrokoo', John Jinapor wondered why the Akufo-Addo government would revert to the IMF for assistance when they promised Ghanaians not to borrow money like previous administrations.
He accused the government of massaging the truth for saying the IMF loan is interest-free, claiming Ghanaians will bear future consequences which will boomerang on the economy.
"In any case, didn't Dr. Bawumia tell us that borrowing is a lazy man's option. Is that not what he told us?" he quizzed.
He further stated that President Akufo-Addo's promise to subsidize electricity bills didn't come as a freebie but part of the IMF loan facility which will be paid back in 15 years.
"Today, in less than 3 weeks you've written to the IMF to borrow money. The money that they're using to subsidize electricity is borrowed money. We will pay back in 15 years time with interest, both principal and interest," he stated.

Jinapo irritates me a lot. He in particular was nobody like Kwakye Ofosu from the KNUST before joining the NDC to milk and use that dubiously acquired wealth to launch a campaign to become a legislator. With all the ROT perpetrated in the energy sector which is even currently under investigation, he is not event ashamed to be opening that acidic mouth. TIME IS DEFINITELY GOING TO CATCH UP WITH YOU.
So where is the fact that he used to set the record straight.
When block-headed people attempts to challenge intellectuals and economic calluses like Dr Bawumia, they just end by making mockery of themselves. I dare John Jinapo and his cohorts to bring out the facts where Dr Bawumia stated that a future Akufo Addo's government would never borrow. They keep on quoting the learned VP out of context for their lazy analysis and inferences only to shoot themselves in the foot. Super Powers like USA, Germany, etc all borrow to support their economies so why not Ghana when the need be? Besides that, borrowing for worthy cause like supporting your citizenry in crisis times like this is the best thing any competent and visionary leader could ever do. When Ghana needed money to purchase for fuel for our thermal plants, JJ and his boss were rather interested in borrowing huge sums of money for the branding of busses, paying of fictitious judgment debts, contracting of new power deals at unimaginable rates, all because they cared less about the citizenry. When the great Bawumia drew analogy in response to the ***barred word*** and incompetent Mahama, by using Dumsor and the Covid-19 outbreak, the two most tragic events that have befallen our economy over the past decade, all the babies with sharp teeeths were quick to jump on the Veep with insults because they simply didn't have the brain to understand the analysis. JJ, better keep quite and enjoy your stolen lucre from the energy ministry ok. May God Bless Mother Ghana, May God Bless the Great Adaklu Kingdom, and May God Bless the Great Elephant.
Well for me all I know is we are NOT going to fly on AIRBUS with an INCOMPETENT PILOT through DUMSO to IMF anymore when little BABIES 👶 WITH SHARP TEETH 🦷 are on board and land us on WOYOMEY’S backyard. I know there could be FORD EXPEDITION to take us by land but we would have preferred 🚌 BRANDING driven by ATIVOR in the middle of BERKO POWER BRIBERY CRISIS which again indicates GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL 1 so I decree like the Jews said NEVER AGAIN TO NDC. NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU
When the power plant issues were raised he was soo quit he doesn't want to talk on the radio now that the systerm is cool he has started with lies again.
There are journalists go again. Did you do a fact check on what the gentleman said thus your headline "sets the records straight" ? Can you confirm what he said is the gospel truth?. You never even did any form of research to confirm his claims. Please our journalists, a little bit of research will help us all.
Why the sensationalism, editor(s) of peacefmonline? This is absurd; purporting to be spokesperson(s) of sore deficit thinkers of a past accursed government. Who is "setting the records straight". Why don't you get off your lazy butts, do some introspective research on this loan by the IMF, and educate your readers as responsible fourth estate of the realm. And that goes to a whole lot of news portals like yourself To whom much is given, much is expected off. Don't disappoint your readers with shoddy journalism with reportage from every Tom, ***barred word*** and Harry. Fact finding, and discerning information of data is why you primarily exist. If you think journalism is living for the moment, wait till a decade or two, whereby your journalistic integrity, and credibility of today, would be judged by a new generation of journalists and the general citizenry. A word to the wise........
To set the record straight. Bawumia never against borrowing rather against borrowing without prudent investment. Besides, john you become irritated by shouting when developing your point. Maybe it is deliberate since you don't have fact to stay in the discussion.
