Tamale is one of the fastest -growing cities in the country with a rapidly growing population. The city has become the next business destination for many multinational and Ghanaian companies since most neighboring countries ply the roads in the metropolis.
The boost in commercial activity in Tamale has increased pressure on the city’s infrastructure and also made it a densely populated place, hence the construction of an interchange will ease traffic congestion and open up the city for economic growth.
According to the NDC National Women’s Organizer, Dr. Hannah Bissiw, the ongoing construction of the Tamale interchange is not a necessary social intervention for the residents. To her, it’s absolutely needless because the residents are plagued by serious problems that need to be addressed and not giving them an interchange.
She added that aluminum zinc road blocks in the city are a major cause of the traffic congestion, inconveniencing a lot of the people in Tamale.
Speaking on Radio Tamale before the Inter-Party Resistance against the new biometric voters’ register on Friday, Dr. Bissiw asserted that the GHC 443 million allocated to the Electoral Commission for the compilation of a new biometric register could instead be used to rehabilitate the deplorable roads in the Region. She added that the people are in the dire need of good drinking water, proper educational facilities and a better livelihood.
“I don’t even think that we in Tamale will say we need the interchange. We would say give us good water, give us good schools for our children to attend; give us good livelihood because that’s what we want.” However, the situation in Tamale makes it clear that Dr. Bissiw is only advancing her own politically orchestrated idea to downplay the relevance of the interchange.
The interchange, apart from easing traffic congestion, will also enhance trade relations and economic integration among countries in the Sub-Region.
