Although he aligns with the Electoral Commission’s reasons for the production of a new voter’s register, especially regarding cost and integrity, a leading member of the NPP, Gabby Otchere Darko, is unconvinced about the institution’s decision to do that now.
In a thread of tweets on Saturday, January 11, Mr. Otchere Darko noted his dissatisfaction at the Commission’s attempt to justify the timing of the exercise.
“The EC has made a strong case (on cost and integrity) for a new register. But, for me, concerns about timing still not well addressed,” he wrote.
Earlier today, some members of a group known as the Inter-Party Resistance against the New Voter Register (IPRAN) hit the streets of Tamale to demonstrate against the compilation of new voters register for election 2020.
Notable among the protesters were Minority Leader in Parliament Haruna Iddrisu, founder and leader of APC, Hassan Ayariga, as well as MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini.
Several stakeholders, CSOs included, have been divided on the Electoral Commission’s quest to compile a new voter’s register.
Among other reasons, there have been debates about the exercise being a waste of resources.
The Commission further sparked outrage when Director of Elections, Dr Serebour Quarcoo, noted that the elections' management body will work with its own laid down plans and programmes; that include compiling a new roll when the need arises.

What is a good register in Ghana and Africa? These same NPP and NDC will still register Minors even if we are compiling a new register. These two parties are the problem of this country. Look at the amount of money that will be used for this new register. We are still running our SHS in tracks (Gold and Green) but we want to use this money for a new register which will end-up to have the same problems like the old one
I think Gabby sees what I see. Most often than not in an attempt to probably outwit our opposition we rather find ourselves in the wrong side. We in the NPP are calling for a new voters register, but I don't think we have even considered the timing as well as how disgruntled most Ghanaians are at this time. We are wishing for new register, but are people rather to register? Recently, CDD had a poll which said many Ghanaians says they won't even vote in 2020. This means those group are likely to say they won't register. If May God forbid, many disgruntled supporters of ours in the Ashanti region alone refuse to register, we have lost the election in advance. The opposition have nothing to lose, whether there is new register or we use the old one. This is because, parties in opposition always have a slight advantage over the ruling one, because their support base are ready to vote. In our case some of our own supporters are disgruntled. We need to be careful how we are supporting this new register, the timing is wrong and we may be laughing at the wrong side of our mouth. The NDC resisted new resister in 2016, thinking that could help them, they ended up losing by the biggest margin in election history in Ghana, 1m votes. We must be extremely cautious about this new register thing.
Massa u sat down to type all these why Jubilee house dey pay you?
NO SINGLE POLITICAL PARTY SHOULD THINK IT HAS A MONOPOLY TO RIG IN ELECTION. WE MUST ALL SEEK A GOOD REGISTER WHICH IS LESS SUSCEPTIBLE TO CAUSE ELECTORAL FRAUD. THE PEOPLE IN PARTY "A, B,C" ARE EQUALLY GHANAIANS AS THE OTHERS OF "X,Y,Z". WHAT EVER FRAUD "ABC" CAN HOPE TO DO, "XYZ" CAN EQUALLY DO THE SAME. IT IS THEREFORE NOT IN THE INTEREST ON ANY PARTY TO SEEK ROOMS TO RIG. RIGGING CAN ONLY BEAR FRUIT TO ELECTION CHAOS OR GIVE VICTORY TO BAD PARTY FOR GOVERNANCE CHAOS. THE IDEA OF BIO-METRIC VERIFICATION IS USELESSSSS, WASTE OF RESOURCES AND TIME, IF IT CANNOT ENSURE NO VERIFICATION NO VOTE. THERE MUST BE A COMMON RULES FOR ALL IN THE SAME ELECTION. NO VERIFICATION NO VOTE. IT IS SAD WHEN PEOPLE LIKE KWESI PRATT CANNOT APPRECIATE THIS TRUTH AND FINDS NO DEFECT WITH THE CURRENT SYSTEM. GHANA WAS FORTUNATE TO HAVE AKKUFO ADDO AS CANDIDATE WHO DECIDED TO CHALLENGE 2012 ELECTION IN COURT. ANY OTHER OPTION COULD HAVE PLUNGED THE NATION TO CHAOS. THE CORRECTION ENFORCED BY THE SUPREME COURT HELPED TO MAKE THE 2016 ELECTION BETTER. NEVERTHELESS, THE 2012 REGISTER STILL LACKS THE RIGHT QUALITY TO BE DESIRED FOR 2020. IT IS OFTEN SAID HE WHO HAS NO SECRETE FEAR NO RUMOR. WHY SHOULD POLITICAL PARTY GET WORRIED OVER NEW AND CLEAN REGISTER IF IT HAS NO INTENTION TO EXPLOIT LOOPHOLES TO CAUSE FRAUD. IT IS LAUGHABLE TO HEAR MONA CLAIMING THAT IF 2012 REGISTER HAS DEAD PERSONS THE 2020 REGISTER WOULD STILL GET DEAD PERSONS. VERY UNINTELLIGENTTTT. IF 2020 CAN HAVE 5,000 DEAD IN A HALF A YEAR 2012 CAN HAVE 80,000 IN 8 YEARS. ANY GOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILD CAN WORK THIS OUT. MR. MONA, YOU NEED YOUR PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER TO THING RIGHT MATHEMATICALLY. ALL WELL MEANING AND REASONABLE GHANAIANS SHOULD URGE EC TO DO A NEW AND CREDIBLE REGISTER THAT CAN STAND THE TEST OF TIME. IT IS NOT EVERY POLITICAL PARTY THAT WISHES EC TO BE SUCCESSFUL. SUCH PARTIES TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LOOPHOLES IN ELECTORAL SYSTEM TO RIG AND CREATE PROBLEMS THE SAME PEOPLE QUICKLY TURN ROUND TO BLAME EC FOR THE TROUBLES THE CRATE. SINCE THE GOVERNMENT IS READY TO FUND THE EC IT WILL BE UNPARDONABLE IF THEY FAIL TO PROVIDE A RELIABLE REGISTER AND A GOOD ELECTION TO GIVE A RESOUNDING VICTORY TO THE NATION.
