Acting Director of Public Affairs of Parliament, Kate Addo has revealed that Parliament is no longer pursuing its agenda of constructing a new chamber.
The proposed chamber, which parliamentary leaders hoped to build within three years, was expected to cost US$200 million. They argued that the present chamber in State House was not fit for purpose because it lacks adequate facilities and poses certain security risks.
However, this was met with strong hostility from the public who felt the money can be channeled into something more useful.
On Monday's edition of Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Madam Kate Addo said even though there is a need for a new chamber if Ghanaians are against it, 'we are not going to continue'.
"There is no chamber to drop because it is not going ahead . . . plans have not been concluded that it was going to be built. The discussions were now starting. We may have put the cart before the horse and there is nothing wrong admitting it. . . . Because of the concerns in the public domain, parliament is not going to go ahead with the chamber and that parliament was waiting for Speaker to brief him on this things . . . we were thinking that it was a very lofty idea, obviously it didn’t go down well with people, we are ready to accept, but it doesn’t mean the need was or is not there; it's just that it is not one of the things Ghanaians are looking for now."
Kate Addo, however, indicated that the "decision to drop this idea did not come from government; parliament is an independent arm."

It means until everybody is all communities is satisfied that actual development has taken place there should be no infrastructural development in Ghana. If the roads and drains in my community has not been done, no residential accommodation must be provided to the District Police Commander, the District Director should not have an office because the kindergarten classroom has not been completed. Let us tread cautiously. Whoever said that building the Kwame Nkrumah overpass is a priority? It's effect is the constant flooding around the area since the days of the construction June 3rd is a clear reminder. Ghanaians beware. Building a 'airport' at Ho is not going to help the Ghana economy in anyway now but it has been built. Hmmmm! Hmmmm!! Hmmmm!!!
ghana must scrap the parliamentary system..........there are so many ways to govern a state. We dont need 275 mps to go and sit some room and talk ***barred word***.
We are indeed lost. Even in UK where the likes of Architectural Icons like Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid etc lived n practiced, every project is subject to a design competition....now check this.. 1. National Cathedral - David Adjaye 2. New Parliamentary Chamber - David Adjaye 3. International Cancer Centre for Children - David Adjaye 4. Marine Drive - David Adjaye 5. Trade Fair Centre Redesign - David Adjaye 6. GNPC HEADOFFICE Accra - David Adjaye 7. GNPC Takoradi Office Complex - David Adjaye 8. New Office Complex for Bank of Ghana (Cedi House 2)- David Adjaye 9. Airport City 2 site opposite opeibea n Golden tulip - David Adjaye 10. Okyenhene's Palace - David Adjaye 11. New Railway Terminals - David Adjaye Only in Ghana....globally, the best way to get the best out of the best designers is to let them compete.... But here, all you need is to be a relative and that is it. This is Ghana ! Powerful Dude
Ehnnn, it means there is a lot of money in Ghana as nana addo said, if 200million dollars could be earmarked for a new chamber, then it means we the workers of Ghana can be paid better that what we are receiving. We are going to demonstrate for pay increases soon.
Nka mobetse bobolibobo. The power of the people is now working. Thanks to Erneeto Yeboah and co. These politicians are selfish, they are only interested in their own comfort not that of those who voted for them.
Dear Leadership of Parliament, please kindly go ahead with the building of the New Chamber. Continue with the discussions on the Architecture and other Engineering Aspects. Also source for Funding Grants for its construction. Let the rest of your membership, most of whom know they will be out of the House, come January 2021, and the join-wagon Ghanaians keep their so called Public Purse and use it to only clean the refuse they create in their dirty environment. The generality only think of Stomach Infrastructure and seem to have an apparent lack of foresight in such strategic decisions. The loud educated few with the means, will also buy tickets and go on tour with their families to see West Minister, why not. Some People, Indeed!
we are doing ourselves great deservice, one day we will come to the realisation that we done evil for not allowing this chamber to fester,There'stoo partisan politics killing this country of ours.
It is a shame that such an important and beuatiful edifice has been marred by so much controversy because we have become so partisan in our country. Now I am not sure we can ever get structure built to replace and existing one unless we construct all the roads, provide furniture for all schools and have health care in every village - a joke. It is that same mentality which nearly marred the construction of the Jubilee House (NDC's hen coop). I do not have sympathy for the parliamentarians though because they have brought this upon themselves because they could not unite and defend the project. I am sorry for them when they know the structure they occupy was a conference centre and not a parliament chamber. It has so many deficiencies and God forbid the day disaster will strike them. I have vowed never to sit in the gallery because it does not have safe emergency exits. Cry my beloved country
