A former Deputy Minister of Communications in the erstwhile Mahama administration, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has pooh-poohed on the landslide victory chalked by Lydia Seyram Alhassan in the just-ended Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, describing it as nothing short of “state-sponsored terrorism”.
According to him, the Member of Parliament-elect for the Constituency, “will go down in history as that candidate who won an election procured through bloodshed and state-sponsored terrorism”.
“It will always stick with her; while her colleagues can hold up their heads high having won legitimate elections," he stated.
The former Deputy Minister, who made these assertions on GhOne TV’s "State of Affairs" with Nana Aba Anamoah, was emphatic that the NDC did not pull out of the election out of fear of losing the by-election, but to rather send a clear message to the NPP in particular and Ghanaians in general, that they (NDC) are unwilling to partake in such an illegitimate practice.
He warned that when the day of reckoning comes, all architects of the lawlessness exhibited on Thursday, will be made to account for their actions,
“...let them tickle themselves and laugh; let them think that they are the masters of this game but the day of accountability will come and we will hold these hoodlums and their sponsors and financiers to account in the manner that will send a clear signal that Ghana is not a lawless country,” he asserted.
New Patriotic Party candidate, Lydia Seyram Alhassan was declared winner in the Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-elections.
The contest were however nearly marred by the presence of some masked, heavily armed men, National Security operatives riding in military grade vehicles marked ‘Police SWAT’, assaulted and shot at some of the observers.
Four political parties - the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress, Progressive People's Party (PPP) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) contested the vacant seat at the constituency.
The candidates who vied for the position of the late Member of Parliament for the constituency were Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the NPP, Delali Kwesi Brempong (NDC), Clement Boadi (LPG) and PPP's aspirant William Dowokpor.
Reporting from the collation centre at Legon, Peace FM's correspondent Obeng Manu indicated that Madam Seyram Alhassan won the bye-election by a landslide victory, polling 12,041 votes representing 68.8 percent while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Delali Kwasi Brempong polled 5,341 votes representing 30.52%.
