The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has condemned the violence that characterized yesterday’s bye-election at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
The bye-election turned violent when some faceless security personnel stormed the Bawaleshie electoral area, firing gunshots into the electorates and injuring about eight of them.
Following the shooting incident, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) boycotted the bye-election.
However, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Lydia Seyram Alhassan emerged winner in the elections.
The UNDP, in a statement copied to Peacefmonline.com, decried the attacks on the electorates, strongly condemning what they term as “impunity and brazen acts of violence which undermine Ghana’s hard-earned democracy and peace”.
“Ghana, as a pillar of stability in the sub-region, must not become complacent. We call on all to avoid violence and the use of inflammatory language that could further increase tensions,” a portion of the statement read.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been following the ongoing bye-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, with keen interest, as this is a further illustration of the democratic process that is imbedded in Ghana.
However, our attention has been drawn to media reports of violence and a shooting incidence by unidentified armed men at the La Bawalashie Presby JHS polling station during the bye-election, leading to the injury of at least six people.
We strongly condemn such impunity and brazen acts of violence which undermine Ghana’s hard-earned democracy and peace.
Ghana, as a pillar of stability in the sub-region, must not become complacent. We call on all to avoid violence and the use of inflammatory language that could further increase tensions.

NPP DISGRACING THEMSELVES
@Aluta, because this can lead to something serious. They are looking at the end result.
I do not support violence but the fact is how many polling stations were involved in the voting exercise and where else was there commotion apart from the Bawuleshie polling station. Those involved were they suppose to be there at that particular time if not what were they doing there? There are lots of questions than answer.
IS THE UNDP THE ONLY BOLD BODY IN THE COUNTRY WHO HAVE WITNESSED THIS BARBARIC ACT FROM A RULING PARTY BECAUSE THEY CONTROL THE STATE AMUNITION? ARE THERE NO OTHER BODIES SUCH AS THE USA EMBASSY, THE BRITISH EMBASSY, THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE OTHER BODIES RESIDENT IN GHANA WATING THE BARBARIC ACT FROM NANA ADDO SINCE HE CAME TO POWER? JUDGES HAVE BEEN ATTACKED WHILE IN COURTS CARRYING OUT THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL MANDATE. NOTHING GOOD CAME OUT OF THE INVESTIGATION AND STATE POWER IS BEEING USURPED FOR PARTY INTEREST.
