The new tax measures introduced by government in July this year is taking a toll on the salaries of Members of Parliament.
As part of measures to raise more revenue to meet its revenue target for the 2018 fiscal year, government among other things revealed it will introduce a new tax known as the high net worth income tax.
In line with the new tax, government established that it will charge 35 percent on incomes that are over GHC 10,000.
Despite concerns by some stakeholders including the Trades Union Congress, the directive has taken effect, and Members of Parliament whose salaries are currently pegged at eleven thousand Cedis are complaining.
Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, expressed his misgivings about the development, saying “Our MPs are earning GHC 2,000 less than what they previously earned before the coming into effect of the 35% income tax on people who earn more 10,000. MPs are earning more than GHC10,000. The take-home of MPs was a little over GHC 11,000 . With the coming into effect of the 35% new income tax, MPs are earning around 9,000 plus. For many of us that is a huge dip because it is an assault on our disposable income. Imagine what 2,000 can do in a rural constituency…It is an assault and an attack on the middle class and it will impoverish more people. ”
It would be recalled that the Finance Minister also announced a 3.5% tax on importation of luxury vehicles with engine capacities of 3.0 liters and above.
He however did not confirm the percentage to be charged.
In line with the new tax, the government was expected to charge 35 percent on incomes that are over GHC 10,000.

I think it is about time some constituencies are merged to save money! it's absolutely absurd to have some mps like this Raz Mubarak and Bawa being mps and being paid with tax payers money for no work done but to insult and bad mouth Ghanaians, just making noise to be paid is annoying so I agree with the government to tax them and for the money to be used to develop their poor constituencies. This Mubarak used his money to marry Muntaka's daughter and they come out with their chests high to disturb our ears with st*pid argument of h*te and env*ness. It's good policy to attract only self made people to parliament not us*less noise makers and disrespectful f000*000ls who never ever worked before, but are surviving because of parliament. They should be taxed for their money to come down to Ghc5000.00, Ghc9000.00 is too much. Before Ghana's politics wasn't attractive to nonentities but people who had made their lives hence the allowance giving them was nothing to them but the country was important until ndc increased the allowances to pay and paid their people with hefty sums when Ghana was ushered into the 4th republic and they dominated the parliament by rigging, which attracted nonentities with big mouths to insult and lie to parliament with nothing in their heads than to amass wealth.
YOU TAKE HOME 9,000 AND YOU ARE COMPLAINING. GOD HAVE MERCY!!! WHEN I LOOK AT SOME OF THESE PEOPLE IN PARLIAMENT WHO MAKE LAWS FOR US, I BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND WHY OUR COUNTRY IS UNDER DEVELOPED AND POOR
COUNTRY BROKE OR NO COUNTRY BROKE WE ALL DEY INSIDE. WHY IS THIS MAN SHOUTING WOLF WHEN THERE'S NONE. MUKARAK, YOU THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY THE ORDINARY GHANAIAN INCLUDING DR PAA KWESI NDUOM WHO WERE GOING TO BE AFFECTED. TAX EXEMPTION DAYS ARE OVER , WE WILL PAY AND SEE SO THAT NEXT TIME WHEN YOU PASSING LAW YOU GUYS WILL THINK TWICE. DVLA IS ALSO WAITING FOR YOUR GHC4,000.00 AGAINST YOUR V8, BLACK LAND CRUISER. MMMMMBOA
Inimical PAYE tax schedule. You listen to few people around you and you think they no it all. You are losing favour of uncounted number of your people in the formal informal sectors. You better better move it to GHc 18,000.00/month and 30% instead of 35%. This is Free advice at no cost. You may ignore at your own peril in 2 years time.
they should stop deceiving the public. They are paying only 350GHC as additional tax not 2,000 as the mp is saying 11,000-10000= 1,000*35%= 350 peacefm editors check your facts before reporting
He should keep queit!! I am working in a foreign country where my pay is not up to 10,000 ghc but I pay 25 percent of my salary as tax......
For all these years, MPs sit in Parliament and shout yeh!yeh! without thinking about the ordinary person on the street. They should ***barred word*** and pay the tax so that the ordinary person can have free-SHS. By the way, the MP should not categorise their salary as belonging to the middle class. A salary of GHC8,000 and beyond falls into the high class bracket.
because of your selfish interest you thinking of votes we the good people of GHANA have seen a true leader with vision who sets the ball rolling and does not discriminate. U aint see anything yet wait and see this is just tax the actual reduction is coming
This 35% tax is ***barred word*** and must be looked at again. Npp will lose my vote in 2020
