Seasoned journalist Kwesi Pratt has lambasted the government and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) for failing to scrap the Special Petroleum Tax as earlier promised Ghanaians.
According to him, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) promised Ghanaians there would be a drastic reduction of fuel prices when given the nod to govern the nation.
He therefore wondered why the government is now suggesting a review in the prices.
Mr. Pratt, speaking on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo', also believed the new adjustments by the government, which is to see a reduction in the Special Petroleum Tax from 15 percent to 13 percent, as "voodoo arithmetic".
According to him, the calculations by the NPA do not support conclusions for the petroleum sector with regard to the prices on petroleum products.
Kwesi Pratt asked the government to explain reasons behind their inability to deliver on their promise to Ghanaians, particularly fuel consumers.
He believed it is pure deception on the part of government, adding that even the review is insignificant because the reduction on petrol is not even up to 2 percent.
“It’s dangerous . . . It’s only voodoo arithmetic that can give you such conclusion. If it’s not juju you’re using to do the arithmetic, you can’t come to the conclusions ... If this is how they’re doing calculations at the NPA, then we’re in trouble because simple methods of additions, subtraction and multiplication don’t even add up”, he stated.

If this is how they’re doing calculations at the NPA, then we’re in trouble. THEY ARE ***barred word***, MARTINS AMIDU SHOULD START WORK FROM FLAGSTAFF(AKUFO-ADDO) HOUSE AND JUDICIARY(HIS COUSIN,GLORIA AKUFO) AND PARLIAMENT(THE SPEAKER) . THEY ARE ***barred word*** USING DICTATORSHIP TACTICS. GHANA IS NOT BANANA REPUBLIC, THE PEOPLE HAVE BRAIN AND CAN SEE WHAT IS GOING ON. DONT THINK YOU ARE MONARCHS, YOU WILL END , AND YOU WILL BE DISGRACED OUT POWER IN 2020
This kwesi Pratt attention seeker is at it again and must not be allowed to get away with impunity. No where in the campaign did NPP promised to reduce fuel prices and i challenge him to provide proof if any exist. The NPP rather promised to remove nuisance taxes which they have delivered for instance excise duty on petroleum product have been removed completely, ESLA has been reduced and stabilization levy has also been reduced from 17.50% to 13%/ When saint Atta Mills promised to reduce petrol drastically he only remove 1% of petroleum tax which resulted in one cedi reduction in 2009 even though he called it drastic in two weeks time the price went up again, John Mahama had the best chance instead of reducing it he introduced the stabilization levy to deprive Ghanaians of the reduction but what are we hearing from these loud and foul mouth commentators like this one. Ghanaians should open and shine their eyes of these marauding commentators whose duty is only to court public support for their party and nothing else. Pratt has no moral right to comment on fuel prices in Ghana again, when he fails to do so during NDC time and having together with NDC held series of demonstration throughout Ghana during Kuffour's time. The current price of fuel on the international market is $69 as compare to %28 during the NDC era and so who cares more about Ghana? Ghanaians must decide the vodoo arithmetic and who they are
We expect the government to do much for us but we don't consider where the resources will come from to be able to deliver. The surest way to raise funds is through taxation. After all there are more private cars in the country than public transport so people should be patient and allow the government to take such taxes to support the vulnerable in the country. Unless we want the government to resort to borrowing, which has a ceiling. I will be sad if the government is misusing our little resources but if the taxes are being used for development projects, I am for the decision to increase taxes. People didn't die when the previous government was using our resources on cars for celebrities and chiefs. Corruption is our enemy and we must come together as a country to fight it.
I listened to Kwesi Pratts FLAWED argument of higher prices with Fuel between 2016-2017/18 WITHOUT TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION OF WORLD CRUDE OIL PRICES IN THE WORLD MARKET WHICH HAS BEEN ON THE INCREASE & UPWARDS SINCE 2016. SUCH A COMPARISON INCREASES IN GHANA'S FUEL PRICES AT THE PUMP WITHOUT TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION THIS FOUNDAMENTAL FACTOR IS VERY VERY DISHONEST!!!!!
The NPP is thinking they are so much loved and liked that they can just do anything and go away with it. This is not NDC - NPP matter. You promised. If you cant fulfill, 'P3 nyansasem bi ka' and stop the 'voodoo arithmetic'. The Ghanaian yesteryears and yesterday is not the same today and now. I supported and voted for change based on trust and promises. Keep your promises bcos i am no fuuul in 2020..
The fact NDC did it does not mean NPP should also come and deceive Ghanaians. And for deceiving Ghanaians NDC,paid the ultimate price by getting voted out of power.,When shall we stop this back and forth comparison between the wrongs done by NDC and NPP and move forward as a nation? If a wrong has occurred let's fix it and not validate it by trying to draw precedent that it was done by someone earlier. While every fuuul can learn from his own mistakes it is only the wise who learn from the mistakes of others. So @Nancy,your comparisons in this context are absolutely unnecessary because Ghanaians are the people suffering for these deceptions.
POLITICAL PROMISES ARE MADE FOR POLITICAL GAINS. THE POLITICAL GAIN HERE IS POWER. IT HAS BEEN GAINED. GOVERNMENT DID NOT PROMISE TO KEEP THE PROMISES. THE PROMISES WERE MADE TO GET VOTES. THE VOTES HAVE BEEN CAST. A SPECIFIC PURPOSE HAS BEEN ACHIEVED. THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY IS ALL ABOUT IN GHANA. SAY ONE THING AND DO ANOTHER. BAIT AND SWITCH. NAME OF THE GAME. HAS THE ECONOMY IMPROVED ANY SINCE THE DIGITIZATION OF THE NATION? AS FANTASY CONTINUES TO MEET REALITY, WE SHALL KNOW MORE. POLITICIANS ARE NOT PROMISE KEEPERS.
come and ask Donald Trump, he honuored all his promises, npp government is a disgrace following the same foot step ndc took
Pratt, NDC also promised Ghanaians they were going to reduce fuel prices when they are voted into power. When they came to power we rather witnessed fuel price increases.Did you ask them to explain to Ghanaians why they did not fulfill their campaign promise? If you are unbiased go and ask NDC why they failed to deliver on their campaign promise, then you will have the moral right to question NPP.Stomach journalist!
It's called stealing from the people.
