Former President Jerry John Rawlings was the toast of thousands of mourners who stormed the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday to mark the one-week celebration of Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.
Ex-President Rawlings was accompanied to the venue by his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.
The former Ghana leader arrived at the funeral ground around 1:30pm to a rapturous applause by the charged mourners.
Interestingly, the sad mourners suddenly became elated when they heard chants of Mr. Rawlings.
Minutes after his arrival, most of the mourners rushed to the dais to catch a glimpse of him.
The shouts continued for some time and Mr. Rawlings, who seemed to enjoy it, intermittently acknowledged the cheers of the crowd with a broad smile on his face.
The security personnel had a hectic time in controlling the crowd who mobbed ex-President Rawlings after he paid homage to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II with his wife.
The mourners started shouting the famous slogan, “JJ do something before you die” which was commonplace during the revolution days.
Mr. Rawlings, who was seen nodding his head in admiration, was finally escorted to the dais by the security personnel.
Interestingly, the crowd showed hostility towards President John Mahama with shouts of “we want change”, “change is coming”, among others.
The shouts of “change” intensified when Nana Akufo-Addo, who was accompanied by party gurus like Freddie Blay, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, among others, arrived at the venue.
The president was virtually forced to leave the venue early due to the chants from the crowd who became very hostile to him.

Does it surprised you? Ghanaians, Have we forgotten what Ashantis did to Papa J? By their deeds we shall know their character. They can bussed themselves to Flagstaff house and hoot at JM, it won't stop him from getting another 4years. If you have a person like Wontumi, apuu reg. chairman of YAANOM, organizing people to do that, do you expect civile atmosphere at Manhyia ? NPP will soon see their smoothness level. They think Kumasi is Ghana.
@ Tee, l don't agree with you at all.
Now some of my own Ashanti brothers have become robots and behave like megaphones thru which their uncultured leaders use to express uncivilized behaviours. They simply mobbed Rawlings because to them, they see Rawlings being at loggerheads with the NDC; and in their voodoo analysis, this will inure to their political advantage hence that attitude. They never cherished JJ Rawlings one bit. In the 1992 electioneering campaign, they composed a song describing Rawlings as a "Son of a ***barred word***". Let Nana Addo, Wontumi, Cocaine Agyepong, Nana Gay Akomeah and all fuuulixh leaders of the party know that they are by deeds of their behavior, they will live to regret painfully of their beastly acts. Barely 10 days to elections, I implore on all NDC faithfuls to remain calm, well composed and focused. Nana Addo will taste the most painful electoral defeat of his time and will never recover from it. I can't wait for Dec 7.

Please you people should stop this propaganda of Ashanti/Northern / Ewe shhhitty talk creating disaffection among the beautiful co existence in Ghana for your parochial, temporal and cheap political gains. It's getting to nauseating levels with some of the comments. Am full blooded Ashanti and proud but a Ghanaian first and don't hate any human being created in the image of God. I see everyone as my brother! But for the records Ashantis are actually the most vilified, scorned and misunderstood bunch. I have lived in Volta region for more than 20 years and have felt the pain of being laughed almost everywhere I go just by the mere sound of my name. We are being called the most uncultured and uneducated. They say we have difficulty pronouncing "one"..."man"..."brown"..."bread" and so on. ....everyone make fun of us in this country but we never complain. I sometimes laugh with the people and move on. On the other hand, how dare you openly call an Ewe "number nine" in an Ewe community. ...you will not be in the land of the living for another minute. The other injustice is the tagging of anyone who speak twi as an Ashanti. It's very unfair because even in Volta, Northern and across the country twi is spoken everywhere. I think Ashantis are unfairly vilified and bustardized but we take it in our strides and move on as one people whiles other tribes play the victim all the time. Fortunately my beautiful Ewe wife doesn't tow this divisive line. Let's stop this unhelpful behavior and a more cosmopolitan lifestyle. Diversity is very beautiful! That's why am so proud to be an Ashanti from Kumasi Maase because Kumasi is the most diversified, multi cultural and cosmopolitan city in Ghana. Talk of Asawase,Fante Newtown, Sofoline, Anloga and the rest making room for all cultural and ethnic groupings in Ghana with their installed cheifs and leaders. Nowhere else in Ghana does this happen. We need each other to build a united Ghana. Let's stop the bickering and ethnocentric tendencies.
Ashanti's should remember that they are not the only people in Ghana they are a fraction of Ghana population
