The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Kantanka Automobile Limited, a local car assembling company, Kwadwo Sarfo Junior, has expressed his disappointment with the decision by government to allow two foreign-owned automobile companies to establish assembling plants in Ghana.
Senior Minister, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, revealed at the Graphic Business Breakfast meeting held recently that government had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two automobile companies to establish assembling plants in the country.
He said it will complement government’s industrialisation agenda.
Reacting to this, Safo Jnr. said the move was wrong.
He said: “If you hear a Senior Minister say that they are going to have two more automobile plants in the country, while there is an automobile plant already in Ghana that you haven’t supported, I mean you clearly don’t even understand industrialisation or the automobile industry”.
He stressed: “You need to support what we already have here that employs Ghanaian citizens; why do you have to go out there, get a foreign company, bring them here to compete with your local industry and kill them off?
“They have money, and if you look in the things that they are talking about now, there are so many clauses. He mentioned that they have to purchase a number of certain cars from them but we [Kantanka Automobile] haven’t given you any clauses, all we’re saying is, take taxes off our vehicle and make the environment conducive for Kantanka to be able to operate”.

I feel very disappointed reading some of the comments here, Africans will always be ***barred word*** hole country if we are not ready to be proud of our own.Donald Trump has always been right. Katanka some of us are proud of what you have done, leave our selfish politicians and continue the good job. We know the story of how the Koreans started and where they are today.
HE DOESN'T EVEN DRIVE HIS OWN CAR THAT HE MANUFACTURES. I SAW HIM DRIVING A FORD EXPEDITION AT LEGON RECENTLY. I WAS SOMEHOW DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE HE KEEPS URGING US TO BUY THE GHANA MADE CARS WHILE HE RIDES IN A FOREIGN CAR. HE SHOULD NEVER BE SEEN DRIVING ANY THING ELSE BESIDES THEIR CAR MODELS.....MY THOUGHT.
Don't you know that there is competition for everything on this planet?Stand up on your feet and compete and convince Ghanaians that your vehicles can compete favourably with others. IS your sister driving around in one of your cars? Don't you think that would be a good branding strategy"Your dad has designed a plane ;would you be piloting it since I know you are a qualified pilot. I know he has designed an armoured car too. Do you think the Ghana Army would be placing orders for them? Be realistic 'know your strength and operate within an area where you have comparative advantage. Your vehicles are a solid example of local initiative. Improve it and convince people to buy them.
...Removing taxes off your cars will certainly make them cheaper but not better compared to other cars or automatically create market for you. What you should rather be doing is partner other investors who might bring tech or processes to help produce vehicles which can compare with other brands. Perhaps, you could also learn to lobby and offer deals that will be so attractive to government and government agencies such that they wud want to do business with you. I wish you well Mr Safo... p/s put crush-test of your vehicles on ***barred word***, etc and seek to convince your potential customers...
AM SAD FOR THIS COUNTRY. WE WILL NEVER DEVELOP IF WE STILL DEPEND HEAVILY ON FOREIGN GOODS. OUR LEADERS ARE HYPOCRITES. EVERY YEAR APOSTLE SARFO INVITES GOVT OFFICIALS AND THOSE THAT MATTER TO HIS EXHIBITIONS. THEY SHOWER PRAISES UPON PRAISES ON THE APOSTLE AND IT ENDS THERE AFTER THE PROGRAM. THIS IS HYPOCRISY AT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL. APOSTLE SHOULD STOP INVITING THEM COS THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY GOOD INTENTIONS FOR HIS BUSINESS.
your father doesn't even drive any of his cars he manufacture and you here complaining...hr is always driving escalade, besides;we are in a competitive world so come up with strategies to survive and stop whining!!!
There suppose to be competition in marketing ,but government must force all DCE´s to buy from you
Only GOD CAN SAVE US.WHY WHY OOOH LEARDERS ONE DAY ONE DAY
