Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly [AMA], Gilbert Nii Ankrah says recent floods across the city are caused by mere negligence of the citizenry.
According to him, “major” cause of the floods in Accra is caused by filth – something he accused the citizens of.
“It’s really sad. This is a major problem we [AMA] are worried about,” he said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Montie’.
Perennial flooding that occurs in some parts of the city has been a major problem yet to be solved by any government.
Recent downpours have seen the city flooded and rending many homeless.

Enforce the law on littering. Traders on pavements leave a lot of rubbish at the end of the day. Take a trip round at night and you will see. Open drains also collect rubbish, plastic bags and sand by the roadside. Is somebody not being paid to work on these things. where are they? Sitting in comfortable air-conditioned offices and collecting their salaries at the end of the month. Whatever has to be done must be done. Action, not words. In the sixties circle, kaneshie, awudome were flooding. So a major solution has to be found.
You're joking. Do you think these gutters can solve Accra flooding problems? We built on all the water ways blocking the water from flowing into the sea. Accra used to have lots of tributaries and wet lands to deal with flooding but we've blocked the water ways with buildings and filed up the wet lands which were absolving some of the flood as storage. The only solution is to pipe the rain water under buildings to run it to the sea to similar to tributaries. We can also choose to pull down buildings and structures built on tributaries and on wet lands. Rain water will always find its way to the sea directly or indirectly. We can make all the gutters we want but they will not be enough to transport rain water fast enough to the sea period. Accra flooding is our own doing and it will take more than gutters to solve this annual problem.
I heard Eugene Arhine talking about demolition of properties on water ways to stop the perennial flood. The major challenge is choked gutters but nothing else. About 90% of gutters are filled with garbage therefore shower of rain can cause flood in Ghana. The only remedy is to BAN rubber products. 2 Enforce the sanitation laws to punish people who go against it
