Election 2012: Verification Without Vigilance Is Meaningless - INEC Boss

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission of Nigeria, Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega, has patted Ghana in the back for opting for a biometric verification process in the December elections, but said it will be meaningless unless the security agencies are on high alert. The Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, on Wednesday gave the assurance that biometric verification would be conducted on the election day on December 7. He said concerns about verification of the new voting system had been taken up by his outfit to ensure a smooth election process. Dr. Afari-Gyans Nigerian counterpart was full of praise for Ghana because verification is the best way to ensure a credible election of a one-person-one vote system. Speaking on an Accra-based radio station Joy FM on Thursday, Prof. Jega admonished the security agencies to be extra vigilant on the election day, despite the electronic and security measures being introduced to curtail electoral fraud. The INEC chairman frowned on a move by the Macho Men for Good and Justice in Kumasi to partner with the security agencies to maintain law and order in their respective localities as the political campaigns heat up, especially during the election day. Macho men activities are tendencies prone to abuse and can result in violence. Their activities must be curtailed during elections, Prof. Jega warned.
