Dancer Arrested For Murder

Kofi Ledi, a 19-year-old dancer popularly called K.K., has been arrested in connection with the murder of a community watchdog committee member, Abu Thomas, who was shot and killed at Alogboshie, Achimota, Accra. Ledi was said to have gone into hiding after he allegedly murdered Abu. According to the Achimota District Police Commander, DSP Peter Yembila, Abu Thomas was shot at close range without provocation while in the company of a colleague during their usual patrol at about 1:30am on Monday February 27, 2012. On that fateful day, Abu was paired with a colleague to patrol the Aplaku Estate area behind ABC, to look out for persons who might take advantage of the darkness to pilfer around or engage in vices while others were sleeping. While on duty, they spotted someone pointing a gun at them. Abu was reported to have recognised the person and screamed: KK why do you want to shoot us? Lo and behold, the said KK allegedly shot Abu in the stomach, making his intestines to gush out. Abus colleague, who is a witness in the case, raised an alarm, attracting residents to the scene. The 30-year-old man was rushed to the Achimota Hospital where he was referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital but he did not survive. K.K. was however nowhere to be found. Later, a 48-year-old uncle of the suspect by name Godwin Korku Gbetsivi surrendered himself to the Mile 7 police as the one responsible for the murder and not his nephew K.K. Gbetsivi had since been in police custody assisting with investigations into the matter until K.K. surfaced and was arrested on March 1, 2012. K.K. explained that he had been away and that before he left, he invited his uncle to occupy his room for fear that thieves might break in, in his absence. K.K. said because his gas cylinder had been stolen twice he did not want to lose any other item to thieves. He therefore denied having a hand in the gruesome murder of the deceased. The two suspects, as at press time, had been referred to the Regional Police Command for further interrogation.
