Veep Bawumia Is Not a 'Driver's Mate' . . . - PPP Chairman

The National Chairman of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has criticized Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia over his vision and policies for Ghana if elected president.

The Vice President and flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 delivered his vision to Ghanaians.

Dr. Bawumia, among other things he intends to implement as President, emphasized that he will abolish the Electronic Levy (E-Levy), make the National Service optional, introduce a flat rate tax and tax amnesty, and introduce further digitalization programmes to transform the economy.

Nana Ofori Owusu, speaking on Peace FM's morning show "Kokrokoo", described Bawumia's vision as "tricky" explaining that he tried running away from the bad policies of the Akufo-Addo government of which he (Bawumia) is a part.

To him, the Vice President cannot describe himself as a "driver's mate" because he is not directly in charge of affairs in the country, arguing that the Vice President is not a mate because he holds power and is the second man to replace the President when he is absent.

"A mate doesn't have a licence. He is understudying, but with the Vice President, he is ready for the position; this is why he replaces the President when he is absent. A mate is not necessarily ready for the position. When a driver is not there, another driver will be brought in because the mate doesn't have licence. So, the concept of the mate/driver scenario, I think, is not the appropriate terms or lingua to use because the Vice President is already ready,"  he said in contention with Dr. Bawumia's description.

He added that he pities the Vice President because he is at a tight corner, stressing that "it was a tight acrobatic rope walking in his delivery."
