Black Stars Must Be Dissolved - Prof. Agyekum

Professor Kofi Agyekum, popularly called "Opanyin Agyekum", says Ghana's national team, the Black Stars, should be dissolved.

The Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana stood strongly by this position, arguing that there is never a single moment that the Black Stars have gone to a tournament without being entangled in any issues.

He also questioned the amount of money spent on the players only for them to disappoint the nation.

Speaking on Peace FM's morning show "Kokrokoo", Opanyin Agyekum told host Nana Yaw Kesseh that his position on the team remains the same.

"It's from 2010 that I started saying the Black Stars should be dissolved...because every time we go (for a tournament), there are issues with it. If there are no issues about the players, then it is about the  management," he said.

He suggested the football association and stakeholders in the sports sector should rather concentrate on the local leagues and nurture good players for the future.

AFCON Exit

The Black Stars failed to make a good mark in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Cote d'Ivoire.

The team was kicked out of the tournament at the Group Stage after they lost their first match and drew with Mozambique in their last game.

Following the abysmal performance of the Black Stars, the team's captain, Andre Dede Ayew, in a solemn presentation of how the team feels following their exit from the AFCON, has rendered an unreserved apology to the nation.

“These past days have been a very difficult days for every Ghanaian football fan and myself. I’d like to apologize for the results in the AFCON that we just exited.

“We know that we should have done better; that we should have brought better results to the nation. As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch, for playing body. We should have done better”, he expressed.
