Bawku Brutalities: Ask For Reposting If You Are Psychologically Unstable - MP To Soldiers

Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, Hon. Kofi Adams, wants military personnel who appear to be psychologically unstable to embark on special assignments to ask for a possible reposting from their commanders.

Mr. Adams, who also sits on Parliament's committee for Defence and Interior, indicated that sometimes the rationale behind some of these military brutalities cannot be explained.

''I know soldiers act under a certain level of command that if they post you, you cannot refuse not to go. But I want to plead with our soldiers that if you feel psychologically you're not prepared to operate in that environment you can request a reposting'," the NDC MP said on TV3's Keypoint.

He was contributing to a panel discussion on the recent agitation in Bawku between civilians and the military that has reportedly resulted in the death of some 6 people.

Hon Adams was particularly concerned about how security-sensitive the area is considering the recent terrorist attacks in neighboring Burkina Faso.

"Bawku shares a border with Burkina Faso where terrorist groups are beginning to breathe on us and we are called upon every day to spend the scarce resource to beef up our security system...We cannot sit down and allow for further deterioration'', he added.

On Wednesday, the 17th of January 2024, there were unpleasant reports about alleged military brutality on some residents of Bawku, specifically, Sabongari, a suburb in the Bawku Central Municipality.

It was alleged that some military personnel closed down on some residents who were said to have been sitting at their usual 'ataya base' on Wednesday evening.

According to reports gathered by Peacefmonline.com, these men were allegedly subjected to severe beatings and drills by these military men.

The Assemblyman for the Sabongari area was said to have appeared on the scene to intervene but reports indicated that the Assemblyman was allegedly threatened by the military. The three men allegedly arrested by the military were said to have been sent to an unknown location.

Reports of their untimely demise came up the following morning, thereby resulting in a public outcry for justice for the death of the three men and the total removal of the military from the Bawku township.
