Elon Musk Sells Off Even More Twitter Collectibles As Part Of Rebranding Auction

Elon Musk is selling off more Twitter collectibles in a rebranding auction after he changed the company's name to X.

Items including the famous blue bird logo, guitars, and an oil painting of Ellen DeGeneres' selfie on the night of the 2014 Oscars will be available, with bids starting at $25.

Musk, 52, officially rebranded the social media site from Twitter to X on July 24, in the latest controversial shake up of the company under his ownership.

Founded in 2006, Twitter takes its name from the sound of birds chattering, and it has used avian branding since its early days, when the company bought a stock symbol of a light blue bird for $15, according to the design website Creative Bloq.

However, Musk has implemented sweeping changes since purchasing the brand outright in October 2022.

The entrepreneur - who also owns Tesla and SpaceX - opted to switch Twitter's blue bird icon for a more minimalist design, simply altering it to a white 'X' on a black background.

The alterations have proved unpopular with users, most notably his decision to remove 'legacy' blue ticks and force users to pay a fee in order to appear as a verified user on the platform.

'Legacy' blue ticks were initially given to verified accounts belonging to people of public interest including celebrities, politicians and journalists.

Due to these moves, Musk has lost a slew of followers on the platform, with the company's value also decreasing significantly since his takeover.

He purchased Twitter for $44billion, with the business sitting at the substantially lower valuation of $15 billion just six months after his takeover, hence his willingness to hold an auction on items in a bid to raise some much-needed cash.

This decision came as part of Musk's efforts to rid the brand of the so-called 'lords & peasants system for who has or doesn't have a blue checkmark'.

Now, the Californian company is trying to shift 739 lots featuring items that range from signs with the old Twitter bird logo to desks, chairs, coffee machines and musical instruments.

Other highlights include the actual Twitter logo on the front of the San Francisco headquarters and a quirky portrait of Robin Williams.

A second oil painting is also being shown, representing one of Twitter's most memorable moments.

It features the photo tweeted by Barack Obama, which went viral after he won another term as US president in 2012.

The photo shows him hugging his wife, Michelle, and it became the platform’s most retweeted photo ever at the time.

One of the larger items offered is a repurposed barn from Montana, reconstructed to create a seating area dubbed 'The Lodge'.

Keyboards, fridges, lockers and bird art are also among the items available as part of the auction, which is titled 'Twitter Rebranding: Online Auction Featuring Memorabilia, Art, Office Assets & More!'
