The Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation(STC), Nana Akomea, has thrown his weight behind the pressure group "Arise Ghana" demonstration against the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government.
The group scheduled their demonstration to commence today June 28 to 29, 2022 in Accra and their aim is to highlight economic and governance challenges bedeviling the country.
But there is a brouhaha over the route and time they want to use for their demonstration.
According to the Police, the Organizers of the demonstration who have requested to "move through the Nima Police Station street to the Arko-Agyei inter-change and end at the Frontage of the Jubilee House where we will picket until 10PM" cannot hold it, hence, they have secured a High Court order to prevent their terms.
The Police, in a statement, said "in the interest of Public Order and safety, we entreated the organizers to reconsider the time frame and start the demonstration early in the day and end before night falls" but "on June 22, 2022, the Police received a verbal response from the organizers to the effect that they are unable to change the time of the demonstration".
They added; “Due to the lack of agreement between the Police and the organizers on the time for demonstration and location for their planned picketing, the Police have had no option but to submit the process to the court for a determination. This was duly communicated to Arise Ghana in a letter on June 20, 2022."
The Arise Ghana organizers are also seeking an appeal to set aside the High Court ruling on their intended demonstration.
"Lawyers for Arise Ghana have consequently filed a Notice for Appeal and an application for Stay of Execution of the said Order. The Police have been duly served. The demonstration will come off as planned," a statement by the group read.
Nana Akomea, also appealing on behalf of the group, asked the Police to allow them to go on their demonstration.
According to him, he sees nothing wrong with the routes that the demonstrators have chosen, therefore wants "them to embark on their demonstration. It's their right but they should make demands that will ruin their own case".
He said on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show on Tuesday.
