President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been criticized for his recent figures on constructed roads in the country.

The President while delivering his State of the Nation Address in Parliament, Wednesday, 30th March 2022 announced that his government has constructed over 10,000 kilometres of new roads since 2017.

“It is in the road sector that we have registered the greatest infrastructure achievement. I know that the word 'unprecedented' is often used with careless abandon in our public discourse, but I use it carefully and purposefully. In the five years of my government, so far, more roads have been built, improved and upgraded than in any other equivalent period under any government in the history of Ghana . . . some ten thousand, eight hundred and seventy-five (10,875) kilometres of new roads have been constructed in these five (5) years”.

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Roads and Transport Committee, Kwame Agbodza wondered where the President got his figures.

Speaking in an interview on Citi FM’s 'Eyewitness news' programme, he said: “Where did the President get his figures? I was so sad about his comments. One of the things he has done is that he has impoverished Ghanaian contractors. The government has awarded road projects to the tune of 40 billion cedis, and we have not got a penny to pay them".

Adding his voice to this during a panel discussion on Peace FM's 'The Platform' programme, a member of the Communication team of the NDC, Mahmoud Kabore described the statement as deceitful.

He said, "what went on in parliament was nothing but a celebration of mediocrity and a conscious effort to perpetuate falsehood".

"The 2022 budget appendix 10c; approved list of projects to be financed from external loans which indicate that the roads to be constructed are even less than 30,000 kilometres . . . what does President Akufo-Addo take us for? Why doesn’t he show us some level of respect?" he queried.
