Election Petition: Mahama’s Legal Team Deliberately Want To Delay Case - Nana B

One of the spokespersons for President Akufo-Addo on the 2020 election petition, lawyer Henry Nana Boakye says he is beginning to think that the lawyers of former President John Mahama are deliberately trying to delay the start of the main trial.

According to him, the comments from the legal team of former President Mahama are quite different from their action in court as they have been filing their documents in bits and pieces instead of filing them all at once for a motion and arguments can be done in order to start actual business of the day.

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Henry Nana Boakye insisted that inasmuch as certain outstanding issues must be addressed before the commencement of the main trial, he suspects that the motive behind the intermittent filing of application is deliberate and intends to delay the trial.

“When the Supreme Court asked all the respondents to file their issues yesterday, the Counsel for Mr Mahama said he should be given up to Thursday to file but the Supreme Court did not agree”, he asserted.

“It is true that in order to for the truth to come out, certain outstanding issues must be addressed but it looks like the motive behind it is bad because if the lawyer of Mahama, yesterday had an application to file to look into the documents of EC, he could have done it yesterday and not do it today”, he added.

“But rather they will file their applications in bits and pieces and all these eat into the time for the real election petition trial to start. What they are saying and their actions are contradicting because it seems that they are dragging their feet for no reason”, he stressed.

Commenting on the application for interrogatories, Nana B as he is affectionately called said that the lead counsel for Mahama, Mr Tsatsu Tsikata could have done that over the weekend since the Court operates on Saturdays and Sundays but rather Mahama legal team chose to file their application on Monday evening.

“To be honest, what the lawyers of Mahama are doing is making me to think that they have some ill motive; a deliberate attempt to delay the start of the petition because you have any interrogatories to file, let us see them on time. We were in Court yesterday and they did not mention any application for inspection until today. They could have filed all their documents and argue all of them out at the same time to speed up the process”, he argued.

He was of the view that the Supreme Court dismissing some demands of the legal team of Mr Mahama is an indication that the Court does not want anything to delay the start of the election petition as they are prepared to handle the case well and effectively.
