Police Promotions Were Not Done Because of Elections, IGP Says Its Mere Coincidence

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been accused of deliberately promoting some police personnel for votes.

According to critics the President suspiciously promoted 2,745 officers to entice them and their families to vote for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December 7 elections.

However, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh speaking to this in a one-on-one interview on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo' debunked the claims insisting they were mere coincidence.

"The promotion occurs every year . . . indeed the promotions were done but it was not because of election; it's a mere coincidence because all of the officers promoted were due, they were not rushed . . . they were normal promotions," he pointed out.

Salary increment

The IGP also responded to 'salary increment to induce security officers' allegation.

"Officers are given allowances during every election and so it was decided that each officer gets Ghc100 for 5 days and that will amount to Ghc500 and then additional Ghc100 to aid in the sewing of their new uniforms. It's never true they had over GHC1000 and that the officers were influenced," he explained.
