Let's Not Politicize Education, Double Track Should Be A Worry – Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang

Former Minister of Education and former vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has disclosed that the double track program being implemented by the NPP government should be a source of worry to Ghanaians and the government.

She says the government should not deliberately politicize education in the country.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' program, she explained that the government’s refusal to complete the already started community day schools is appalling.

"Why should politics let the country’s educational infrastructure suffer?" she asked.

She added that the double-track being implemented by the government could have been avoided if those schools that were started by the erstwhile Mahama government were completed by the ruling NPP government.

"I can tell you on record that 20 Community Day Senior High Schools were completed during the tenure of former President John Dramani Mahama so why has this government deliberately refused to complete the uncompleted ones."

"If the government is serious about improving the educational system then they should see to the completion of the Community Day High Schools," she said.

The Ministry of Education, however, says the community day Senior High Schools begun under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration have not been abandoned as alleged.

In a statement dated Wednesday, August 28, the Ministry said 25 have been completed so far since the Akufo-Addo-led government took office in January 2017.

According to the statement, 14 were completed single-handedly by the government while 11 were sponsored by the World Bank through the Secondary Education Improvement Project (SEIP).

This is in response to allegations made by former President John Dramani Mahama that the schools have been abandoned.
