Bill On Vigilantism To Be Considered By Parliament On April 29

The Vigilantism and Related Offences Bill 2019 is to be considered by Parliament under certificate of urgency on 29th April, 2019 following the decision yesterday by the Committee on Constitutional Legal and Parliamentary Affairs that the bill is of urgent nature. 

The bill aimed at dealing with Vigilantism and Related offences in the country was laid before Parliament by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice Ms Gloria Akuffo.

The President Nana Akufo-Addo indicated in his State of the Nation Address to Parliament his intention to initiate the passage of a bill by Parliament to deal with Vigilantism in the country in case the NDC and NPP Which were tasked by the President to disband their political vigilante groups fail to do so.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Prof Michael Aaron Oquaye refered the bill to the Committee on Constitutional Legal and Parliamentary Affairs to decide on whether the bill should be considered under certificate of urgency or not

Chairman of the Committee Hon Ben Abdullah Banda in presenting the committee's report said the Committee recommends to the House to allow sufficient time for the committee to engage stakeholders such as political parties , civil society Organisations , security experts to solicit their views to ensure the passage of a robust law to deal with vigilantism and related offences in the country .

The Speaker subsequently fixed April 29th for the deliberation on the bill.
