As part of celebrations for World Aids Day, the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on all political leaders to test for HIV and help fight stigmatisation.

Earlier reports suggested that the Presidential aspirant of the opposition National Democratic Congress demanded that other aspirants of his party test for HIV as part of their qualification processes.

But speaking to Kwami Sefa-Kayi in an interview on Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo, Monday, Hon Bagbin said he urged all political leaders and not only aspirants to test and make their status known 'just to also encourage others to do so'.

"I made a remark about us showing leadership by example and called on all including aspirants to do this publicly and help with the issue of stigmatization. It is not just aspirants; I was talking about all political leaders" he noted.


World AIDS Day

This year’s World AIDS Day which was celebrated on 1st December, 2018, was on the theme: ‘Know Your Status’ as timely.”

A recent report released by the Ghana AIDS Commission indicated that the prevalence of HIV/AIDS amongst the youth in 2017, particularly those below the age of 24, rose to about 45% nationwide.

A Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) report revealed that in 2016, a total of 15,116 people in Ghana died of HIV and AIDS-related illness.

One of the challenges in the fight against HIV/AIDS is the willingness of people to voluntarily go for testing.
