Eurobond: Murtala Fires Bawumia

"I listened to the interview and I was flabbergasted that such statements could be made by no less a person than the Vice President and sadly, he is reducing the office of the vice president to a child’s play…we are told that these days clowns are no more in high demands but you can find a lot in our political discourse and I think clearly that was what he demonstrated” said Murtala Mohammed, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Nantong constituency in the Northern Region.

The former legislator was commenting on the brouhaha surrounding the issuance of a 15-year bond by government.

The bond was issued for $2.25 billion.

However, the Minority in Parliament has called for a probe into the local bond which was issued some days ago, citing a conflict of interest situation involving the Attorney-General (A-G).

The minority MPs at a news conference in Accra Tuesday said the bond issued by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta also lacked transparency.

Reacting to the various issues raised by the minority, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia described them as ignorant.

Speaking to the issue during a panel discussion on Radio Gold, Murtala Mohammed said there was no need for the Vice President to attack people who had ‘legitimate’ questions to ask about the Eurobond.

According to him, Dr Bawumia is “virtually becoming a clown and the earlier he retreats the better for our democratic discourse”

“This is not the first time we are going for a bond facility; I remember when the NDC went for such facility, Dr Bawumia who unfortunately is losing his relevance said you don’t go in for Eurobond to shore up the value of a sinking domestic currency…I absolutely agreed with him and it stands to reason that he must agree with us today. My understanding is that Dr Bawumia was not officially briefed…

I listened to the interview and I was flabbergasted that such statements could be made by no less a person than the Vice President and sadly, he is reducing the office of the vice president to a child’s play…we are told that these days clowns are no more in high demands but you can find a lot in our political discourse and I think clearly that was what he demonstrated”

He added that “this is not the first time he has sent blistering attack at people who are asking legitimate questions” and advised that he (Dr Bawumia) “should mellow down; you can disagree but certain languages ought not to be used by even serial callers let alone someone who occupies an enviable position such as the Vice President. I think that he is virtually becoming a clown and the earlier he retreats the better for
