THE WHOLE Tema Metropolis has exploded into wild jubilation, moments after the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei declared the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the President-elect of the country.
Though the jubilation started the moment President John Dramani Mahama was reported to have conceded defeat, the euphoria hit a crescendo long before the Electoral Commissioner made the official announcement.
Nana Akufo-Addo defeated the incumbent President John Dramani Mahama and five other candidates in his third attempt at the presidency.
Out of 10,781609 total valid votes cast, Nana Akufo-Addo, according to the EC, polled 5,716,226 (53.85 per cent), while closest challenger, President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) polled 4,713,277 (44.40 per cent).
Flags of the NPP were visible at every corner of the three constituencies in Tema namely Tema West, East and Central as supporters of the party went to town with their excitement running across the streets of the central business district; Community One, Tema Newtown, Sakumono, Lashibi, Community 7, Community 4 among others, dancing to the party’s campaign songs.
Interestingly, some other supporters were seen in the buckets of pick-up vehicles and motorcycles tooting their horns and blowing vuvuzela to mark the victory which had been long in coming.
NPP paraphernalia had completely become a hot cake as the party supporters rush to purchase them.
In Ashaiman, an NDC dominated area, scores of NPP supporters were seen openly jubilating after the declaration of Nana Akufo Addo’s victory.
Some of the teeming supporters who spoke with the DAILY GUIDE noted that the victory was anticipated hence their over-excitement.
They indicated that though their Parliamentary Candidate Alhaji Labaran Yakubu Barry, was not able to recapture the seat from the NDC, they were enthused about the votes that the party polled.
Evaluating the overjoyed mood within the municipality, the jubilants claimed though they were sure of Nana’s victory, they least expected President Mahama to concede defeat.
Prior to the declaration, party supporters in the metropolis were gripped with serious apprehension, waiting for almost 48 hours for the declaration of results of the presidential polls in the general election.
The delay saw many people staying glued to their radio and television sets waiting for the announcement from the EC Chairman.
While some people were monitoring the declaration of the election results on radio sets or their mobile phones, others could not take their eyes off their television sets in their homes and offices.
