“The claim that the NHIS has collapsed is mostly false,” says Joy FM’s Reporter Raymond Acquah.

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claims that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has collapsed under President Mahama’s administration has been proven to be untrue per a report attributed to an Accra-based radio station.

A group calling itself "Coalition For Truth", in a video (a little over 3minutes) based on a Joy FM programme, indicates that the NHIS is fully functional with many more people subscribing on daily basis.

The video begins with a dictionary definition of who "a compulsive liar" is and shows the NPP Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo reportedly telling Ghanaians that the “National Health Insurance Scheme has fallen in water” and further promised that he will revive the Scheme when elected President of the Republic.

"The Scheme has collapsed. It has been turned upside down. And I am coming to revive the National Health Insurance Scheme, which ensured that the poor in society gained access to healthcare without the financial burden which used to be associated with healthcare delivery (under the cash and carry regime),” he told supporters at Nkrankwanta and Diaba, both in the Dormaa West constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.

But Coalition For Truth's video shows this is contrary to JoyFM's news report dubbed “FACT CHECK” which insists that “TODAY as many as 30,000 people are enrolled onto the scheme every single day. Averagely 35 new applications are received from healthcare facilities monthly across the country wanting to join the scheme as service providers. And the NHIS has 4,600 healthcare facilities licensed to provide service to NHIS members across the country. These are made up of government, mission and private facilities while an average of zero facilities leave or stop providing service under the scheme in a month. And patients covered by the Scheme are covered by 517 different formulations of medicines on the NHIS medicines list.”

The news report also shot down the opposition party's claims that cocoa production under the NDC administration has been on the decline.

Quoting figures from the International Cocoa Organisation (ICO), "FACT CHECK" concluded that the NPP's claims regarding declining cocoa production were "mostly false" since available figures indicate that the "average annual production" between 2000 - 2008 (under the NPP) was 450,000 tonnes and between 2009 - 2015 (under the NDC) was 800,000 tonnes.
