The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set a target of attaining 50,000 votes in the Akropong Constituency in the upcoming general election slated for December 7 this year.
In view of this initiative, a group known as “Operation 50,000 votes,” has been set up by the party’s constituency office to augment the efforts of its executive members in ensuring a resounding victory for the party.
The Akropong Constituency Chairman of the NPP, Mr Emmanuel Bekoe, made this known last Saturday when the Professionals for Political Action (PPA), a pro NPP group made up of professionals in all sectors, visited the constituency.
The group, made up of about 50 professionals such as teachers, doctors, lawyers, carpenters, media consultants, accountants and many others, was in the constituency for their general meeting and also to donate some items to the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital at Mampong Akwapim.
The items, valued at GH¢8,000, included toiletries, wheelchairs, bags of rice, hand sanitisers, soft drinks and cooking oil.
Hard work
Mr Bekoe explained that the NPP was working tirelessly to get people in the constituency to fully understand the campaign messages of the party’s presidential candidate, Nana Addo-Dankwa-Akufo-Addo, and the party’s Parliamentary Candidate, Nana Ama Dokua.
That, he said, would encourage the electorate to appreciate the vision that the two have for the constituency and vote massively for them.
“We are working very hard by going to every corner of the constituency to spread the good news of the NPP and how it will transform this country when voted into power,’’ he said.
According to him, although the constituency is a stronghold of the NPP, the party is not taking things for granted to ensure that it puts up a sterling performance in the December 7 polls.
Electoral dynamics
The constituency, which is made up of areas such as Akropong, Mampong, Tutu, Amanokrom and Mamfe, has a total voting population of 61,000.
In the 2012 general election, the NPP got 29, 032 votes in the presidential election, representing 64.8 per cent of the total votes cast, and 26, 828 in the parliamentary election, representing 61. 15 of the votes cast.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) gained 15, 389 in the presidential election, representing 34.35 per cent of the total vote cast and 15, 588 in the parliamentary election, representing 35.53 per cent of the total votes cast.
High turnout
Present at the ceremony was the Deputy National Organiser of the party, Mr Daniel Kweku Danteh, who urged people in the constituency to go out in their numbers and vote for the NPP on December 7.
“The only way for people to change this incompetent and non-performing NDC government is to make it a point to come out and vote them out of power,’’ he said.
