The opposition New Patriotic Party [NPP] has finally condemned the disparaging ‘Sex-For-Job’ comment by its leading member and MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong as “unfortunate” and “regrettable”.
The party’s Communications Director, Nana Akomea, noted that the lawmaker has been asked to apologize to the Electoral Commission chairperson for his disparaging comments.
Speaking on JOY FM’s Newsfile – Nana Akomea said “The party has engaged him [Mr Agyapong] in the matter and the party has urged him to do the honourable thing”.
The outspoken MP, while addressing some NPP supporters in Kumasi, accused the EC Chair Charlotte Osei of trading sex for her current position.
His comment has generated many cacophonies over the past weeks with some leading female politicians and gender activists among others calling on parliament to penalize him.
The NPP also came under pressure to speak against what Kennedy said – and also force him to retract his remarks.
The Assin Central MP, a couple of days ago, acknowledged his comments were in bad taste but accused the media of embellishment.
But contributing to a panel discussion Saturday, Nana Akomea indicated that the NPP equally reprimanded the MP contrary to earlier held perception that the opposition party backed him.
“There is no doubt this comment against women is terribly unfortunate,” he added.
