Mind Your Language: Speaker Warns MPs

Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho has cautioned Members of Parliament (MPs) against undermining the country’s constitutional bodies.

His warning follows criticisms against the legislature over the conduct of some lawmakers.

For example, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, not too long ago, made comments that suggested that the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei, exchanged sex for her position.

Also, Nkwanta North MP John Oti Bless hurled abuses at Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood on Accra-based radio station Montie FM on the same day that the Montie 3 made contemptuous statements against the Supreme Court, for which they have been sentenced to a four-month jail term.

Addressing MPs before going on recess on Friday, 5 August, Mr Adjaho urged the lawmakers to be decorous and civil in their language, since bad utterances fuelled the mistrust Ghanaians had in state institutions.

“I will also advise members to desist from engaging in any verbal attacks on constitutional bodies as this causes our citizens to lose confidence in our governance institutions, thereby creating instability and undermining our democracy,” Mr Adjaho said.
