Presidential Transition(Amendment) Bill 2016 Taken Through Second Reading Stage

The Presidential Transition Amendment Bill 2016 which seeks to amend the Presidential (Transition) Act 2012 (Act 845) to deal with the lapses identified in the Act, was taken through the second reading stage in Parliament today following a motion moved by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Mrs Marietta Brew Appiah.

The amendment of Act 845 of the Presidential Transition Act 2012 is to address challenges experienced in the transition process in 2012 to ensure an effective and smooth presidential transition in the country in future, according to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

She said the bill provides for a reduction from 22 to 13 the number of persons appointed by an incumbent President who has been re-elected to constitute the transition team in order to reduce the cost related to the persons appointed.

The Minister added that where 13 people are appointed by the elected President to constitute the transition team a quorum of one-third is specified to make it easier for the team to transact business.

The bill also provides a six-week tenure for the transition team.
