Gbese Mantse, Nii Okaija III, has decried attempts to get President John Mahama to invoke his powers under Article 72 of the 1992 constitution, to release the Montie trio, who were jailed by the Supreme Court for contempt.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Nii Okaija III agreed with the decision taken by the Supreme Court saying, “as far as I’m concerned, the Supreme Court judges were right in the judgement on the Montie FM case.”

“The sentencing has been passed by very highly qualified judges, I have no qualms as to whether it is too lenient or not” he said. 

The Gbese Mantse’s comments conflict with the statement made on Monday by the Ga Traditional Council which called on President Mahama to show clemency to the Montie trio jailed by the Supreme Court for contempt.

Nii Okaija III also questioned the rule of law in the country, and speculated that political corruption permitted such actions to take place without ramifications.

“We consider Ghana to be one of the best democracies in Africa. But it seems to me that we take the law into our hands. Certain people think that they can say anything they want without the slightest doubt that what they say is going to lend them into trouble. It is because there are certain people who unfortunately who believe very much that certain politicians will help them if they fall into trouble.”
