MP Challenges Gov't: Lets Have A New Register If You Feel Youve 80% Endorsement From Chiefs

A challenge has been thrown to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government by the opposition NPP MP for Okaikoi Central Constituency, Hon. Patrick Yaw Boamah to agree for a fresh voters’ register if the government still feels it stands the chance to win the 2016 election without the current register.

According to him, the government should not panic to accept the clarion call for a new voters’ register if it believes so much its projects in the country couple with the 80 percent endorsement by some chiefs to secure the NDC government victory in the next election.

“If government is crying about money and somebody says ‘I will give you the money to prepare a new register’, what is your problem? If government feels it has done all the good projects, they are trumpeting and the government also believes the chiefs are giving them 70-80 percent endorsement, let’s prepare a register and get those endorsement; is that not the case?”, he quizzed.

In an exclusive interview with Peacefmonline.com, Hon. Patrick Boamah wondered why the ruling NDC government is bothered on the call for a fresh register when international community has shown interest to support the EC to get a new register.

He however called the Electoral Commission to consider the cost involved in auditing the current voters’ register and how long it will take for the auditing process as against the challenges and the ramification of auditing.

“The question is how much does it cost to prepare a new register and how long will it take? Is it going to derail the program of the EC?...we believe our evidence before the EC and panel is very credible and we believe it is safer to prepare a new register than to go and do an audit,” he charged.

He insisted there is no guarantee that after auditing the current register the challenges which always surface will be resolved as people always go to court when audited reports are presented by auditor to challenge it and even punch holes which are even damning.

He admitted he will be disappointed if the current voters’ register is not discarded to pave way for a fresh register; explaining that it does not cost anything especially when bothers on the peace and security of the country.

He was of the view that the donor community has agreed to support the EC due to its huge investment in the country as their wealth in the country will be affected if Ghana engages in electoral dispute.
