General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), Rev Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong says political parties taking entrenched position in finding remedy for the country’s voters’ register will make it difficult for the Electoral Commission to do independent work.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding for a new voters’ register for the 2016 elections due to its finding that about 80,000 Togolese nationals are in Ghana’s voters’ register; making the register not credible for the next elections.

In another finding of the NPP, it has reported that the current voters’ register is bloated with over 2,000 multiple registrations.

Per these findings, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has also stated the position of the opposition NPP is wrong to demand a total new voters’ register as there is ongoing operation by the EC together with all the political parties to de-duplicate the voters’ register to make the register credible.

The ruling NDC is firmed on it position that the current voters’ register should be maintained as there is nothing wrong it; stressing the current register is the most credible for the next elections.

Based on the entrenched positions of these political parties, Dr. Opuni-Frimpong on Okay Fm’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show urged the Electoral Commission to rather to heed to the demands of Ghanaians and do what is right and acceptable to drive home confidence in election polls.

“We don’t need entrenched position on whether or not to have a new voters’ register. We don’t want a situation where some political parties will feel they won or lost on the case of voters’ register”, he stated.

“If it happens this way, we cannot have success in this exercise. So the EC should be independent by rather listening to every views of Ghanaians; EC must do independent work on the voters’ register and come out with the best way which will help Ghanaians so that NDC and NPP will not feel either of them has won or lost over the case of the voters’ registers”, he stressed.
