UPP Joins In The Demand For A New Voters Register; Says It Has Credibility Crisis

The voices from pressure groups and other political parties demanding for a new voters’ register from the Electoral Commission before the 2016 general elections is increasing as the General Secretary of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Razak Kojo Opoku has joined the crusade.

In a signed statement on behalf of his party, Razak Kojo Opoku has stated that United Progressive Party (UPP) strongly believes that the 2012 Voters’ Register is bloated with minors, foreigners and so it is not credible for the 2016 general elections.

According to the statement, either cleansing or auditing is not an option to address the negative issues and mistrust surrounding the 2012 voters’ register; therefore demanding that the current voters’ register be replaced with a compilation of fresh and credible register for the 2016 general elections.

Below Is The Full Statement of United Progressive Party (UPP):

REQUEST FOR A NEW VOTERS REGISTER FOR THE 2016 GENERAL ELECTIONS

The United Progressive Party strongly believes that the 2012 Voters Register is bloated with minors, foreigners and it is NOT CREDIBLE for the 2016 general elections.

The 2012 Voters Register has an image, integrity and credibility crisis and it is not a good document for the conduct of the 2016 general elections.

Cleansing or auditing is not an option to address the negative issues and mistrust surrounding the 2012 Voters Register.

We are therefore demanding that, immediately:

1. The 2012 Voters Register is replaced with a compilation of fresh and credible register for the 2016 general elections.

2. The biometric devices used in the capturing and recording of the voters data during the 2012 general elections equally need to be changing altogether.

The biometric devices have been tampered with and we strongly believe that transmission of results could be intercepted and tamper with to favor a particular party. The biometric devices were properly synchronized during the 2012 general elections.

In the long term, the Electoral Commission and the Government should also consider the following proposal:

1. Electronic Voting

2. Resourcing the National Identification Authority (NIA) by the Government to functions properly in accordance with the purposes it was established so that the Electoral Commission can rely on the primary data generated by the NIA for the compilation of Voters Register.

3. The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development together with the Birth and Death Registry should also take Public Address System very seriously.

For and on behalf of United Progressive Party:

……Signed…..
Razak Kojo Opoku
(General Secretary)
