NDC Membership Hits Over 2 Million

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketsiah has disclosed that the party has registered over two million members nationwide in the new biometric register which will allow every card bearing member of the party to vote in the November 7 parliamentary and presidential primaries.

According to him, the party has exceeded its target as it expected to register one million members at the end of the exercise.

He pointed out that, the party hoped to get two million active card bearing members of the party on the register after the necessary sorting out and cleansing of the register has been done to be able to know the actual members of the party in the country.

“With this, we hope to win massively in the general elections as each member will be tasked to win over more people into the party”, he added.

The NDC chief scribe made this known in Cape Coast on Friday when he launched the new biometric identification (ID) card for NDC members in the Central region.

He further disclosed that the Volta region has the highest number of NDC members in the country as it recorded more than 300,000 followed by the Northern and Ashanti regions with more than 250,000 and 200,000 thousand members respectively.

Mr Nketsiah indicated that with or without the biometric ID card, party members can vote provided their names had been captured in the party register.

He explained that the exercise which was to help the party know its total number of members in the country for equitable distribution of funds would also help to determine the growth and popularity of government and the president.

He added that it will also strengthen the communication gap between the rank and file of the party and eradicate bribery and corruption in the selection of a parliamentary candidate for the party.

Mr Asiedu Nketsiah hinted that each member will be given a unique ID card number for easy identification which would enable them to pay their dues directly into the national coffers.

He disclosed that 800 candidates would be battling for the 275 parliamentary seats with only 70 of them being women.

He expressed concern about the low participation of women in the upcoming primaries and charged members of the party to push for hardworking and dedicated women saying, “the voice of women is very crucial in every social democratic party”.

He advised the candidates to conduct clean campaigns and appealed to them to accept the outcome of the primaries warning that anyone who goes independent will have to start afresh if he or she decides to re-join the party.
