DPSI Students Travel To Malaysia To Represent Ghana In World Scholars Cup Competition

Ghana is set for another major international academic laurel as twelve students from the Delhi Public School International (DPSI) make a trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to compete in the World Scholar’s Cup.

Three junior teams and one senior team from DPSI will be participating in the Global Round of the competition scheduled to take place from 22nd June to 26th June, 2015. Over 3000 students from 40 countries will test their brain power against one another through Team Debates, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge and a Scholar’s Bowl.

Participants who excel will qualify for the final round which will be held at the Yale University in the United States of America.

The academic exercise cuts across Arts, Music, Science, History, Literature, Social Studies and Special Areas about Heroes and Superheroes.

Founded by Daniel Berdichevsky, the C.E.O. of DemiDec Resources in 2006, the international team academic tournament provides opportunities for students to discover and develop their intellectual skills.

Rishabh Goel is a 16 year old student who will be leading his colleagues for the tournament. He explained that DPSI has prepared adequately through several weeks of research and learning.

The 12th grader who aspires to be an engineer believes the competition will inspire students to develop into global leaders. He is optimistic that DPSI will return to Ghana with several honours to make the country proud.

For Shawn Owusu-Nartey, a 12 year old student who wants to be a pilot, participating in the tournament has improved his public speaking skills and confidence.  He has learnt the importance of teamwork and sees himself as a debate genius.

Mrs. Helen David is the Head of Department for English and one of the coaches for the students.
DPSI is competing in the tournament for the second consecutive year. Mrs. Helen believes the experience from the previous year and hard work will propel the students to the top.

She disclosed that coaching has been challenging as the curriculum for the tournament is set above the level of the students. She opines that students will benefit immensely by acquiring important skills and broaden their knowledge.

“The syllabus is beyond their standard and gives them a wide range of areas to learn. Their confidence level has improved, their writing skills, vocabulary and general knowledge has been enriched. The competition takes care of their holistic development and that is what we want for our kids. These are the crème of the school and they will achieve greatness for us,” the educationist stressed.

The Director of DPSI, Mr. Mukesh Thakwani was glad with the preparations. As an industrialist and C.E.O. of Tema based B5 Plus steel company, he thinks constructive debate, comprehensive writing, teamwork and knowledge are key things that will help anyone succeed in life.

“Here at DPSI we give different platforms to students to prepare them for life. School is not only about academics. We will always help our kids to put them on the path of greatness so that they will be the leaders who will drive the world in the future.”

The Principal of DPSI Mr. David Raj approved and provided the needed resource for training because the tournament matches the objective of the school in holistic development of pupils.

He said: “it is an intellectual programme which enriches the knowledge of students and boosts confidence and public speaking abilities. It teaches them to be leaders in various capacities. I see a total personality change in some of them and they will do exceptionally well in the tournament and future chosen careers”.

Built as one of the social corporate responsibilities of B5 Plus Limited, DPSI won an award in 2014 from the West African Regional Magazine for quality education in Ghana.

The U.S based World Confederation of Businesses (WORLDCOB) also honoured the school for its universal education and state-of-the-art infrastructure.

DPSI delivered Ghana’s best performance in the recent Scripps Spelling Bee which was held in the United States of America.
