Prez Will Live Up To Expectation

The EGLE Party has assured Ghanaians that President John Dramani Mahama will live up to expectation in the appointment of the next chairman of the Electoral Commission.

The party has, therefore, urged Ghanaians to ignore the pettiness of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), for calling for broader consultations on the matter.

The Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, is expected to proceed on retirement in June this year and Article 70 clause 2 of the 1992 Constitution states that: “The President shall act on the advice of the Counsel of State, appoint the Chairman, two deputy Chairmen and other members of the Electoral Commission.’’

According to a statement issued by the EGLE Party and signed by Mr Frank Boansi, the Acting Media Relations Officer of the party, the President was already engaged in wide consultations with the Council of State members in accordance with the Constitution on ‘’this important matter”.

The statement said the EGLE Party had noted with great concern orchestrated media agitations over the appointment of the successor of the Electoral Commission Chairman,  Dr  Afari -Gyan.

The party stated it believed in the leadership of President Mahama to meticulously choose a suitable successor for the position.

‘’We, however, noted  with concern attempts by a section of the Ghanaian populace, particularly the opposition NPP, to stampede the President into making a rush and uninformed choice,’’ the statement stressed.

The statement wondered why Nana Akufo Addo and the NPP believed their political fortune was tied to the persona of the EC boss.

According to the EGLE Party, it looked as if the Electoral Commissioner would have the power to manufacture figures for the NPP to win elections ‘’instead of mobilising their disgruntled and de-moralised supporters.’’

The  EGLE Party, in the statement, thanked  Dr Afari-Gyan for exhibiting a high sense of integrity and resilience in the discharge of his duties much to the admiration of African nations and beyond.
