Butcher Fined For Stealing A Pregnant Ewe

The Amasaman  District  court has fined a 20-year-old butcher GH¢ 500 for stealing a pregnant ewe.

Nana Ofosu pleaded guilty when he appeared before the court and was convicted accordingly.

The trial judge sentenced Ofosu to pay the fine or face a six-month jail term.

According to the prosecutor, Sergeant Nashiru Salifu, the complainant in the case is Ernest Opoku, a “trotro” driver, while Ofosu is a butcher at James Town in Accra.

Sgt Salifu said Opoku was driving from Mayera to Accra at about 3:30 a.m.on the said day and on  reaching the Mayera public cemetery, he saw Ofosu standing there with a fertiliser bag with a concealed item in it.

Sgt Nashiru said Ofosu signalled Opoku to stop for him to board the vehicle, which he did.

Instantly, Opoku suspected Ofosu to be in possession of a stolen property and alerted the mate.

The mate then took the luggage to the booth for safe keeping while Ofosu jumped onto the front seat.

The prosecutor said  the mate pressed the bag and realised it was an animal concealed in the bag, and signalled the driver with his hand.

Opoku kept mute and drove to the Pokuase Police Station and alerted the police about his suspicion of a stolen animal.

Ofosu was quickly apprehended by the police and when the bag was opened, a dead pregnant ewe was found in it.
