'Hacked' NPP Mail Announces Nana Addo's Resignation As Flagbearer

The New Patriotic Party has discredited the authenticity of an email announcing the immediate resignation of Nana Akufo-Addo as flagbearer of the party for the 2016 elections.

The mail, circulating on NPP's official letterhead and purported to have been signed by Nana Addo himself, surfaced late Tuesday and comes from what appears to be the NPP's official email, signed by Perry Okudzeto, Deputy Communications Director. It reads thus;

"From: "NPP Communications Directorate" <[email protected]>

To: [email protected]

Sent: Tuesday, 24 March, 2015 9:29:28 PM

Subject: RESIGNATION AS NPP FLAGBEARER

Colleagues, please find attached a party communications relating to the above subject for your perusal.

Thank you."

An attachment to the mail quotes Nana Addo as saying his decision to quit as flagbearer had been taken in the best interest of the party and same communicated to the "National Executive committee and elders of the New Patriotic party" during a meeting earlier in the day.

"I have arrived at this painful but necessary decision after months of soul-searching and deep reflection. I have also consulted extensively with my family, friends and respected figures in our party.

"I so much wanted to lead our great party to victory in 2016 in order to form a government of competent people who will save our country from the path of certain destruction that the Mahama administration has set it on.

"Not a day has passed since availing myself to my party to lead it into the 2008, 2012 and 2016 elections, that I have not been humbled by the unflinching support and love of the millions of our supporters across the country and in the diaspora.

"I am acutely cognizant of the fact that decision will come to them as a great shock and disappointment owing to the time and energy they have invested in my bid to lead our party to victory. To all members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party I wish to express my profound regret that I am unable to be the instrument through which your desire to see a competent government that will deliver rapid qualitative development will come to fruition.

"Please be assured that in taking this decision I have thought deeply about the interest and welfare of the party.

"I am fully convinced that under the circumstances this is the best decision I could have made all things considered. It is a far better thing I do today than I have ever done for this great party and tradition."

However, Perry Okudzeto, the man who supposedly distributed the mail, has denied ever sending out any such information or the existence of same.

He told the Daily Graphic that it is a hoax and should be treated with the contempt it deserves.

He was certain a mischief maker had either cloned or hacked the party's official email server to send out the untrue information, pointing out also that Nana Addo himself had on Tuesday attended a lecture delivered by his running mate, Dr Mahmudu Bawumia and there was nothing to suggest he had relinquished the office of flagbearer.

Interestingly, the 'forged' mail had Nana Addo urging the party to consider Dr Bawumia for the flagbearer position in his absence.
